Just took my 2016 GT in to order (under warranty) a replacement trim piece for the right mirror stalk that must have fallen off and was told the same story. Was told my bike is part of this recall too but they neither have the parts nor instructions yet as to what to do. Soooo ... they'll call...
The vision of having to ride in such traffic for any length of time makes my heart hurt. But I wouldn't worry about excessive wear on this machine. If you actually follow the recommended maintenance intervals, you'll (it will) be fine.

When this happened to me, it took a trip down to the BMW Service Center to have the ECU reset the windscreen calibration program then it worked fine again. It happened just after I had disconnected my battery, for an hour, to install aux lights & horn.
