2 up sustained highway riding

My older 220cc scooter didn't like running high in the rpm range for extended periods of time as I think that's what made the CVT belt let go at 1800 miles.

However what we have here in the BMW is something a little more beefy.. I'm planning a 4 hour trip with a passenger and wonder how the CVT belt will enjoy that at probably 70-75mph for sustained periods of time?
I have no issues with the engine being run at higher rpms for long periods of time as its pretty much designed for that, and well, its not made of rubber, lol..

The CVT belt is my only potential worry spot... The scooter calls for CVT belt replacement at I think roughly 12000 miles. Any idea what belts cost?

What do you guys think? Have any of you done anything like this with your C series?

Belt replacement is 24,000 miles, not 12,000, according to info I found on the web. I just did 2,000 miles in a week (most of them high-speed interstate at 65-75 mph depending on posted limits with occasional dashes above 80) fully loaded (but no passenger) and had no issues.

Just make sure you pay attention to the tire inflation pressures for riding with a passenger, that's all.

I am very careful about tire pressures. I usually set them 1-2 psi over the recommended settings for a little less rolling resistance and mpg..

This is what I saw for recommended maintenance.

CVT Belt and rear chain replacement at around 12,500 miles. I'm sure of course this stuff will last longer but until we see the service manual which tells us the minimum recommended belt width before replacement is necessary this is probably what I'll go by. Sound like a pretty expensive service it I had to guess.

Replacing all the brake fluid is also sort of strange for 12,500 miles?

12,500 is what was recommended for the TMAX. I KNOW I read an article that said the interval for the Beemer was 24,000 but now I can't find it. Well THAT sucks! Hopefully BMW will come out with a DCT sometime in the future. That damned CVT belt is the downfall of all of the maxi-scooters out there.

The way I've been riding, I'm looking at a belt a year.

I thought I read somewhere the the Burgman 650 didn't ever need a belt? Why can't we have that?

I am assuming the BMW belt it probably north of $500 too. Though I'm sure 12,500 miles is only a recommendation...

Hmmmm...

BurgmanUSA Knowledgebase : 650 CVT Info

Wonder what the interval on the Honda Silverwing is? They call their transmission a "Honda V-Matic" (which is probably Honda-speak for "CVT").

Maybe since this is the first full year of production, BMW is being overly cautious in their service interval. I understand the new TMAX 530 has a longer replacement interval than the older TMAX 500 models.

I would tend to think they are being overly optimistic too. I also noticed that the 30,000km and 40,000km service was to replace the CVT belt and chain as well. That seems silly... Why would you wait till 20,000km and then do it every 10,000kms after that?

If you own the Burgman you really don't what to have to change the belt it is any where from $1200 to $1500 as I have been told from owners of the Burgman

Yeah, it seems the engine has to come out to service the CVT, probably why they make the belt "last the life of the bike". Still, makes me wonder why other manufactures don't use that belt setup? Cost perhaps?

Actually I have the BMW's repair manual and it say the following:
20 82 501 Replacing CVT belt with rollers (for maintenance) every 20000 km
21 21 600 Check Clutch (clutch removed) every 40000 km
33 83 502 Replacing chain every 20000 km
33 81 501 Replacing chainset for maintenance every 40000 km (hmmm, chain and chainset??!! I need to see what is the difference)

Looks like 12k CVT belt replacement as well as the chain is due at 12500 miles!! Ouch!!

I know I can replace the CVT belt myself as I have already done it to put my HIT clutch in and the rollers but chain is entirely different thing.
I'll check the instruction to see hove it is done.

The final drive chain is in an oil bath so if we remove the side cover I assume a bunch of oil of coming splashing out too?

Could the Chainset at 40,000 be the cam chain?

Now what we need is a cost for the CVT Belt and the final drive Chain.

I would think that if the chain is in an oil bath that it would last a lot longer than 12500 miles, if it was a dry system I could see the replacement at 12500 miles so why bother with the oil bath if you would have to change at a short interval, The belt can probably go longer than 12000 miles but than you are riding always wondering if and when it is going to break, If it is a kevlar belt you could get 20000 miles with no problems.

We just need the minimum belt thickness from the service manual and then we can at least check it at 12,500?
