2014 650 GT "chain rattling noise

Hi Everyone,
My first post and recently purchased a 2014 C 650gt with 4500 miles. It recently started making a loose chain rattling sound until it has warmed up 3-8 miles. It is loudest at the "lowest gear" CVT.
It has had great maintenance through its life. Is there something I can check, or adjust? Is this normal for this type transmission?
Please let me know any additional information that may be helpful. Thanks!

Hmm, my first concern would be the timing chain tensioner. The only other chain is the final drive and it doesn't usually make any noise since it's encased in pretty thick lubricant.

Can you tell if the sound is coming from the front of back?

Thanks for replying. It is definitely coming from the front. It also sounds like a piston “knocking” but it varies with the speed and not rpms. This again is only noticeable when it has been sitting overnight or not warmed up. From 0-20mph it’s noticeable then more again when decelerating 20mph or below.
the rollers are Dr Pulley and exchanged before I purchased it.
Timing chain / clutch springs / any other items that may need adjustments at such a low number of miles?
thanks again!

My first concern would be to check to make sure the timing chain recall has been done.

Thanks! I will get on the BMW website and check the vin. I think it will give a history of all the recall work the bank has had done. I’m trying to take a video and capture the sound and add it to the post. Thanks again.

That's definitely the recalled chain tensioner on the Gen 1 bikes (2012 thru 15). Don't know if BMW will still repair it for free as they were doing in 2014/15. I remember that the recall said to not ride until the repair was made.

Thank you. BMW states I have no open recalls on this bike meaning the repair had been made at some point. Since the noise currently goes away after a mile or two and is not overly loud, the local service manager says it could be normal. If it seems to get worse then we should check it out for a fee. I may add the Malossi variator upgrade kit and have it checked then.
Any reviews or comments on the upgrade? Thanks again!

Though I don't have any experience with the Malossi variator I have done a few upgrades and ended up regretting most of them. The only upgrade I'd consider is replacing rollers with Dr. Pulley sliders but in the stock variator. That's cheap, easy, and will last much longer than the rollers.

I'd absolutely stay away from changing out the clutch. Doing so cost me >$500 (US) and while the stock clutch isn't perfect, it lasts and is trouble-free.

Thank you. That’s great advice and I believe I will be taking a measured approach two upgrades. The previous owner installed the doctor pulley rollers so I’m not sure how sluggish it was before then. I feel there is definitely some possible improvement in shifting especially low end down shifts. I believe I will try to install the variator myself. But we will see. I will update when completed. Thanks again!
