About to buy my 4th C650 GT ....

Tomorrow, I'm paying my neighbor to drive me four hours from South Florida up to St. Petersburg. Purpose is to pick up a new-to-me C650 GT. It's my fourth.

This is a 2015 vs. my current 2013. It has 2,600 miles vs. my current 21,500. It's Sapphire Black Metallic vs. Platinum Bronze Metallic Vomit. The original owner says it's flawless and has been garaged every night.

Price is $5,900, so if I can get around $5,000 for my very well maintained 2013, that's a pretty good deal to drop down 20,000 miles for a bike two years newer.

I got the VIN # and checked on recalls before I pulled the trigger. Both the timing chain tensioner and left front brake hose were replaced. Oil, filter and brake fluid changed recently, so I will check the air and CVT filters and coolant and should be good to go.

A couple days ago, I ordered a Utopia driver's backrest that's being shipped December 13th, so that will go right on this bike.

I'm excited. I love the GT. This is not a Gen 2.0, 2016+ model, but that will happen eventually.

Hmm, the pic is there.

Here's the CycleTrader ad: https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2015-BMW-C-650-5018560114

If anyone's looking to buy a rock-solid GT, this is my bike for sale on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1146803606128597

I live in Boca Raton, 40 miles north of Miami. Your visit is perfectly timed. The paradise weather arrived this morning.

I will be in your neck o' the woods in a few months. I'm going to tow my bike up to Rochester NY to spend the summer, and visiting childhood haunts and friends in Virginia Beach is high on the list of exciting things to do.

Congratulations on your find, I'm sure you're excited to get another bike to wrench on, now that your 2013's been tuned to perfection.

I agree that effectively buying 20,000 miles for ~$1k is a bargain. Just think of how auto dealers value mileage overages on leased cars -- you're effectively paying $0.05 per mile to roll the odometer back, while dealers charge their customers 3x-4x that when they go over, as well as you preferring the 2015's color, and don't have to shop for new accessories or tools.

Noooo!!! You promised to stay with your current GT! Couldn't help yourself I suppose. Congratulations on the newer bike, that would be a good trade if you can sell your current one for $5K.
I thought you lived in Delray Beach. I lived in Boca Raton in the eighties, getting my MBA from FAU. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Probably a lot different now.

I appreciate the good wishes, thanks.

The bike is home. I paid my neighbor to drive me four hours north to Tampa, made the deal and rode 140 miles south along the Gulf to just north of Naples, where my sister lives. Spent the night there and rode 174 miles across Florida on Thanksgiving Day. The GT behaved beautifully. The only thing I didn't like was having to ride across the Sunshine Skyway, the 430-foot high bridge that crosses Tampa Bay. It was super windy and all I could think of was being blown over the side and into the drink with my new bike.

Had one small issue. The owner broke the brakcet/screw socket for the bolt at the bottom of the right front fairing (the battery compartment). There was a visible gap and I immediately remembered at least two members here talking about missing that bolt and having their fairings fly off on the highway. Since I had 5 or 6 hours of 50 to 70 mph in my immediate future, I locked the fairing down with duct tape, so no air could get in. It was ugly but it worked. Now I can replace the bracket and fix it properly.

"I'm sure you're excited to get another bike to wrench on ... and don't have to shop for new accessories or tools."

Not a whole lot to wrench at 2,600 miles with the oil and brake fluid recently changed. But I love the second point -- yes, I have the variator holder, torx bits, oil filter wrench, diagnostics, etc. and that will make life a lot easier.

"Noooo!!! You promised to stay with your current GT! Couldn't help yourself I suppose."

Well, I didn't promise, but it was my intention ;o). I am a sucker for a good price on a low mileage GT. It boiled down to color, lower miles and two years newer.

" ... that would be a good trade if you can sell your current one for $5K"

It would have been a good trade but I misread the market. Before Covid, I had a cash offer of $5,500 for my 2013. It's different now. I listed at $5,400 and got little interest. Dropped to $4,900 and little interest, with over 100 people reading the ad by now. Just went to $4,600 today. I believe the difference is inflation. With prices up, people are more careful about what they buy, and they are buying less. I bought the bike for $3900 and put $500 into it, so hopefully I won't get beaten up too badly.

"I thought you lived in Delray Beach. I lived in Boca Raton in the eighties"

I did live in Delray Beach and still ride there ever morning to feed pigeons and gulls on the beach. Got divorced at the end of 2019, sold the house, split the profits and went our separate ways. Boca is closer to family I have in Parkland. Because there is a lot of money in Boca, the amenities are ridiculous, beaches surrounded by Old Florida forests, fantastic lap pools, the best children's park I've ever seen (Sugar Sand Park).

Delray you could get a new upper right cowling I called Escondido CA. BMW for that part which blew off.
They did paint it black not the perfect paint job but very close to it. Call BMW Escondido CA. to see IF
they can order that part 760 520 1288. I paid $135.00 and tax i think it was free shipping.. Give that a shot.
Does that have the rear seat heated? There is the switch on the seat.

Greg, thanks for that info. I made a note since that's a great price (vs. $419 OEM) and I believe BMW doesn't stock or manufacture those fairings any longer.

Not sure where or when I acquired it, but I actually have the exact, broken off bracket/bolt socket piece that I need. Absolutely made my day to dig through my C650 GT drawer and find it. A little Plast-aid, which holds like industrial-strength cement, and I should be good to go.

Good give that a try and see IF that works. See i called that BMW dealer out in CA. cuz they even had the not
painted. That is what i was asking for since BMW does NOT have the black in stock. But they did
paint it. part no for the blank is 46638563818. I did NOT want to pay $538 bucks. you are welcome for the info

Turns out I didn't have the right bracket/bolt socket ... BUT I found something better. The previous owner left the original broken piece and bolt in the tool packet under the seat. Not sure why he didn't mention this while I'm duct taping the fairing in his driveway, but I was thrilled to find it. Used Super Glue to hold the piece in place then built a little Plast-aid fort around it. Worked like a charm. Now I don't have to fret about my fairing falling off on the freeway.

Today I connected my MotoScan app to the bike via OBDLink and turned off the SERVICE alert. Still "to do" but no rush is change the coolant and brake fluid and clean the brakes, making sure the caliper pins have plenty of SylGlide in them.

Not getting much action on my 2013 for sale. It's down to $3950 and I just placed an ad on CycleTrader. Seems like there are more serious buyers there than Facebook Marketplace. It only takes one and it's a great bike.

Why four C650 GT's? Here's the story for those who love to read about this wonderful machine ....

1. 2016 C650 GT. My first love. White metallic paint and 832 miles on the odometer when I bought it on my birthday in September, 2018 for only $5,000. White is still my favorite color GT. The seller was a grandmother who drove it three miles a day to see her ailing mom in a nursing home. When the mom passed away, the owner couldn't bear to ride it again. I took a train from South Florida 320 miles north to Jacksonville, bought it and rode it home on US-1. There was an unfortunate "Oh, by the way" in that she dropped it in her gravel driveway and one of the fairings was scratched pretty good. The photos didn't show that and she didn't mention it. After traversing Florida and leaving myself with no other way home -- and looking at the best motorcycle deal I ever made -- I kept the grumbling to myself and bought it anyway. Another downside: It had salty corrosion on the engine block from being in a carport in a very humid climate for three years. Also had a maddening issue with the Check Oil warning light -- the dreaded yellow pyramid. It came on repeatedly. I must have checked the oil ten times on the ride home; it was always perfect. Had to be a faulty sensor. Ultimately, between the scratches and corrosion and faulty warnings, I had enough and sold it to a man in Fort Lauderdale who bought it for his partner (who had never ridden a mile) for $6,500.

2. 2017 C650 GT. Black Storm Metallic. This one was flawless. Not a hint of a scratch with 2,232 miles for $7,000. I bought it from a physician in Fort Myers, Florida, which is on the left coast of the state (I'm on the Atlantic side). Got a ride there and rode home 180 miles across the wide open spaces of Central Florida -- a pretty blend of sprawling ranches and sugar cane fields. After six months, I decided to treat myself to the luxury of two bikes in the garage and picked up a gorgeous, matte black, 2016 Burgman 650 from an ex-cop in Bradenton, south of Tampa. Each day, I had my pick of riding motorcycle-style on the BMW or cruising on the super-smooth Burgman. Eventually I noticed I was routinely picking the Burgman. That SECVT transmission with the sound of a commercial jet is so enjoyable -- and reliable, always 3,000 rpm's at 50 mph. After half a year I figured I'd stick with the Suzuki and sold the BMW to a guy in Delaware for $7,000. I was wrong but didn't know it at the time. The Burgman's transmission beats the GT's, but the BMW has TPMS, bigger tires, beefier suspension, much better handling and motorcycle-like ride. It's also way easier to push around a parking lot or garage and the design doesn't resemble an old-time bathtub on wheels. We live, we learn, right?

3. 2013 C650 GT. Platinum Bronze Metallic Vomit. Hated the color of this bike from the get-go. That was a major reason why it's now for sale. This was a rehab project and I fell in love with this bike over time, at least mechanically. Found it in a dark corner of the garage at a Ducati dealership in Pompano Beach. Beyond the $100,000, 100% carbon fiber Ducati's capable of 200 mph was this GT, literally with cobwebs. It was a trade-in and the dealer didn't seem to know what to do with it (on the other hand, they sure knew how to deliver a bike: mine was delivered to my driveway, no charge -- kudos to you, Two Wheels World). This GT had a GRP exhaust, IMG stickers everywhere and the rear tire pressure sensor wasn't working. I imagined the owner was a devotee of "ride it like you stole it." Took it for a test ride and it felt solid, so I bought it for $3,900 with 15,100 miles. Invested $500 to update battery, belt, rollers, oil and filter, plugs, brake fluid and pads, air and CVT filters, chain rail and chain oil and coolant, and lo and behold, the GT responded like an abused dog adopted by a loving family. It felt like a new bike ready for tens of thousands more miles. I figured I'd keep it for years, but the color kept nagging at me. Somebody is going to get a well-tuned machine when they buy it.

4. 2015 C650 GT. Black Storm Metallic redux. Bought this for $5,900 with 2,600 miles on the odometer when I rolled out of a very exclusive driveway on the barrier island of Tierra Verde, south of St. Petersburg on the Gulf. I wasn't really in the market for another GT but saw this one on CycleTrader. The owner never had it on the freeway and used it to ride two miles to the beach. He said he didn't have a motorcycle license, so that might explain his low key riding habits. Not a lot to do on this but enjoy it. I'll update the brake fluid and coolant. A Utopia backrest for the 2013 is on the way. I bought it for the 2013 and it fits this 2015. My Nelson-Rigg Route One seat bag will attach nicely to the backrest; that will add a ton of storage because I can use the bag AND the under seat storage. Previously, I had to attach the bag to the grab rails, which meant you had to take off the bag to get under the seat, a PITA. Soon I can lift up the seat with the bag still on it. I rode the 2015 to the beach today to feed my birds. Definitely similar to the '13 but feels more solid, more tight, probably because it hasn't been rolled over 21,000+ miles like the 2013. It was very enjoyable to look at the black bike in public and think, "Man, that looks sharp!" rather than, "Well, it's solid mechanically, but oy, that color." (2013).

God willing and the creek don't rise, my next GT will be another Gen. 2.0 model (2016+). The updated GT is faster off the line and has a "growlier" exhaust sound that mimics a BMW motorcycle. Even thought BMW stopped making GT's, they produced them through 2020, so there will be low mileage GT's in pristine condition for years to come. And I will have my eyes open for them. I love this machine.

As for the 2013 for sale, I found a buyer for $3,900, but when I hit that price point I had cash buyers crawling out of the woodwork, which tells me the price is too low. Original MSRP was $9,990. Average retail today is $4,985. So I am putting a price of $4,600 on it and I'll see what happens. That feels more like a fair price for a fully updated bike.

Update: sold the 2013 with 21k miles for $4,600. Had another cash buyer waiting eagerly in the wings.

When I raised the price from $3,900 to $4,600, all the lowball offers and buyers who said they had cash and would pick it up tonight or tomorrow morning faded away. They were replaced by two or three serious buyers who knew the bike.

Prices are crazy nowadays. For example, there are two 2014's with around 5,000 miles for sale in South Florida for $7,200 and $8,000.

There is a 2013 with BMW top case and nav system with 731 miles for $7,000. That one was intriguing and I called about it. Oddly, it was at a car dealer in a small Florida town. The salesman was "pretty sure" the timing chain tensioner recall work had been done. He didn't have a single detail about the bike's history. Boo-bye.

On the high end, there is a 2020 with tan seat and 2,600 miles nearby for $11,990, which is $995 more than MSRP. Good luck with that.

I think my buyer got a good deal, and I don't mind that. I hope he has a great run with the bike. I filled up the tank and detailed it for pickup in the morning.

Yeah there are lots out there i get compliments on my bike all the time. They ask fast does it go 112 mph
with a 650cc motor that hauls ass I know here in Houston' on the f/b market place or even cycletrader there
have been abit of listings. I chose this bike cuz it looks more like a motorcycle. People like to know what it
has that other bikes don't have Yeah the prices are a bit high but well worth the $$$

Congrats on the buy and sell. Interesting that you got more reputable buyers when you raised the price a bit.

"Interesting that you got more reputable buyers when you raised the price a bit."

I suspect if the price gets too low, people who know the bike figure it's beat to heck, and they're usually right. Low prices on brand names also attract flippers, and there are a lot of those in South Florida. In my case, I simply underpriced it. I'm positive I could have gotten $500 to $1,000 more if I had any patience about selling (and I admit I have none; I already ordered MOTUL oil and BMW filter for an oil change 5,000 miles in the future).

The other factor is so many people down here have ridiculous amounts of money. For a guy with a $10 million oceanfront estate, $8,000 for a 2014 GT is coins in the couch cushions. Whereas for average folks like me, $8k means something. I know the value of that many dollars.

Buyer just rode off. A transplanted Frenchman named Pierre in his 50's who had a T-Max until last year, sold it and regretted it since. He will enjoy the GT.
