battery charging through accessory connection

Sorry to bring the old topic but I am going thru the same thing now. I have 2017 with cigarette lighter in the left cubby. I bought a brand stinking new BMW ($$$) charger last year for my other bike and now I cannot use it for C650GT. I asked the local dealer and they said that many people complain about cigarette lighter type outlet. They offered to sell me an adapter which they make in the house. 20 euro later my charger indicates "Short / Reverse Polarity". Took it back, they rewired it, but still no luck.

I aslo tried today, and the outlet is working for usb cell phone charging when the ignition is on.

My plan is to install SAE fused direct to battery harness; Powerlet piece arrived yesterday.

It's a shame that I cannot use super-duper BMW charger. The only other connection available with the charger is alligator clips. I might come up with some kind of adapter SAE - BMW style female plug.

Thanks.

Well, what do you know...magic happens when you read the manual.

"The Power socket in the front left storage compartment is not suitable for chargers. Only charge a connected battery via additional power socket in the rearstorage compartment".

It seems as the design changed over the years. Mine is 2017.

Thank you

Install Trickle Charge Lead from Battery thru the Side of the Cubby Box

Install Trickle Charge Lead from Battery thru the Side of the Cubby Box

  1. Purchase an appropriate length lead
  2. Remove Frt Rt Panel
  3. Connect Lead Wire to Battery Terminals (Pos & Neg)
  4. Open Cubby
  5. Drill hole thru side of Cubby… a Spade bit cuts thru like butter
  6. Clean up rough edges of drilled hole as needed
  7. Run Lead Wire to and then thru hole in cubby... secure Lead Wire as desired with small Plastic Cable/Zip Ties from Battery to Hole
  8. Make sure you leave a long enough Lead Wire length inside the Cubby; or secure it; so it does not accidentally fall back thru the hole later
  9. Replace panel
You then connect your Trickle Charger to the Lead inside the Cubby

This way it is not hanging off the bike (ugly); and is available by just opening the Cubby.

I have attached a picture of what it looks like when you are done!

Well, mine definitely didn't look like it when I was done

I connected SAE pigtail to the battery and routed the plug to the front of scooter, under the beak, attached it there with wire ties. It's not visible and it works for me. I am not planning on using the plug for anything other than charging or air pump (hopefully not). I don't use heated gear here as I have seasonal plates (April - October), otherwise insurance is just too expensive. I also made my own BMW style female plug to SAE connector from left over parts I had laying around so I could charge the battery now with BMW charger that I already spent $$ on.
