C650 GT Windscreen Adjustment Problem

The battery in my C650 GT discharged to the point that it wouldn't start but it wasn't fully dead (the instrument cluster still came on). I plugged it into my tender overnight and everything is OK except that the windshield adjustment mechanism doesn't work. There's no noise when I press the button either up or down. I checked all the fuses and they look good. I also looked in the "Repair and Service Data" CD but didn't find the voodoo that's required to get it working again. Thoughts or do I really have to go to the dealer to get it working again?

Did the engine start after charging ? Did you clean the battery terminals?
Yep, the bike started right up and has been running fine all week. All the other electronics work (e.g., signals, seat/grip heaters, etc.)

Did you check the fuses under the right side fairing panel?
Yep, I pulled them all last night and they look good.

davidh, check the "handlebar switch replace" thread. You're not the first to experience this problem. BMW will replace the switches for free. Mine were done during the last service

After an Instrument Cluster update, my screen no longer worked. Tech had to plug in again, and set the upper and lower limits. I suspect your screen forgot where it is. The only way that I know to fix is to back to the dealer. My BMW manual doesn't give any other option.

Thanks! I was able to get a quick appointment tomorrow and will report back.

Being the mechanical savant that I am (ok, stop laughing Jaime, Skutorr, yellasei, Snowdog, Xian, Doermon, Bill S., etc etc) I can tell you that I personally have not been disappointed by recommendations by my BMW dealer. I have not really had any problems but have asked them about several mentioned on this forum and found them to be straight with me.

Of course, not every dealer is 100% trustworthy (which makes a strong argument for having some degree of mechanical knowledge), but I have been to 3 BMW dealerships...2 Ohio and one in S Cal...and found at least those three able to answer my questions, and, if need be, get me back on the road with the minimum of hassle and expense. (Only one rental gave me "issues" and even those were in my mind.)

So, for those that like me do not have as high of a degree of mechanical expertise as some on this forum, don't think all dealers are out to get you. It just ain't so. Not that this is an anti-dealer thread, but don't be intimidated by your your lack of "machine guts" knowledge. Check here and then check with your dealer.

Ok Steve Perhaps you can help. I haven't done the recall and called the Westside Cleveland dealer and he can't see my C650GT till the end of April and tells me that the recall may take more than SEVEN hours because he has a lot of lawnmowers and chainsaws to repair.. The eastside dealer said he will call me but it has been two days now and no call.

Where did you have the work done?

You can reply privately if you like. Some day ask me to tell you about the NYC ticket I got (I have never been to NYC).

Sometimes I forget how good Hansen's BMW in Medford, OR is. Fast reasonably priced service. My scoot's windshield decided to quit, luckily in the up position, but a quick visit to my dealer for a computer update and it's been fine ever since. Sure wish I had the cable and program to do my own reboots.

That was it! The dealer advised I'm on the list for the switch recall but they set the lower/upper limits so I'm back in business. Frustrating that there's no other way to do it but at least it didn't cost me anything except an hour of time.

Is it BMW SF? They have been excellent to work with for me.

Hey Kim,

I have had work done in Aurora and Wooster (mostly Wooster) although I know the west side people from my interest in the R1200GSA. And, yeah, now is a tough time of year to get bike work done on a timely basis around our neck of the woods.

We'll have to grab some Java at the "bike hangout" so you can fill me in on the NYC ticket. Hope you didn't pay anything 'cause it's well known that Mr. Cruz will fix all Beemer owner tickets in the Big Apple.

The Chagrin Falls bike hangout looks a lot like a Starbucks....

Hmmmm...Really not much further than All Seasons in Wooster and I have heard of them for some reason. Might be a good choice for a day trip, especially if you get there early and they give you a bike to ride (Kim, try for an RT ). And as you mentioned before, Phil, that is a great part of the state to ride in.

I had the same thing happen. Got an update and the windshield no longer operated. I didn't notice it for a couple weeks because the weather was cold and I just left it all the way up. I went back to the dealer and they reloaded the update and replaced my switches at the same time, no charge under warranty and all was good again.
