chain adjustor #3

Today I finally had a chance to replace the chain adjuster in the rear drive (it was warmer out)

When I changed the adjuster the first time there was still a fair amount of slack. This time going from #2 to #3 I found less slack. This is what I expected as the chain is not stretching as fast

If this continues going from #3 to #4 I don't see a problem getting 100,000 + kilometers (60,000 + miles)

While I was removing the cap screws I noticed one had stretched. I don't know how as I use a torque wrench and use the shop manual specs for all torque screws and cap screws. There is no way I was going to get one on a Saturday afternoon.

Off to Home Depot they have a 6x35mm hex head (no good to long and the threaded section was not long enough.

Canadian tire had a 6x30mm hex head with full thread that will do

What oil did you use for chain? I see a part at MAX BMW but it has not shown as stocked the last couple of times I have looked. Do you have a part# and source? Thanks,

Tell me more about the chain adjusters. Do you get them from BMW? How do you know you need the next larger size? Chain slack?

On the side of the casing remove the BMW cover (blacked out) you can see chain lift chain with screw driver if you can lift 17mm of an inch it is time I replaced mine at 25,000km (15,000 miles) then again at 50,000. I will do the stage 4 at 75,000km then go back to number 1 and replace the chain at 100,000km (60,000 miles)

And yes you get them from BMW

This job took under 30 minutes

Save the adjusters for the future and reuse them

Did you replace the gasket for the swingarm case or just reuse it? I ordered the #2 adjuster Monday since I am approaching 15K miles.

The first time I used the old one and used a some gasket stuff. Never had a problem. The second time the old gasket broke so now I am using just gasket stuff (I'll see how long it last)

Installed the Stage 2 tensioner this morning and changed out the chain oil. Was pretty simple maintenance to do, one of the few things that didn't involve removing and replacing any tupperware, which always makes for an easier job. About 13,700 miles, maybe could have gone a little more but was right at the mark. My manual indicated you could either measure or use a little arrow reference mark to determine if tensioner should be changed (or as BMW states - adjust chain tension by replacing the tensioner with the next in series.) I ended up just replacing the gasket, pricey little piece, but I figured I purchased one and might as well not have to go back and do again. Mine had shown some seepage in past anyways, although tightening up the bolts did help.

So this is a couple of years later. I checked the chain say at 75000km. Not enough slack yet to fit #4 in. As for the gasket stuff I used still holds from when I did the chain adjuster 25000km ago no leaks
