Daytona or Bust on a C650GT

I was TEMPTED to take the scooter this year... but considering I hadn't been on a bike for three months by the time Daytona rolled around (thanks to the MISERABLE winter we had) I thought it was far wiser to take the K1200LT... which is what I did.

The K12 has snow tires, right? Just in case.

Nope, but it has FAR better wind protection and REAL cruise control. Oh, and it can go nearly 300 miles on a tank of fuel, too.

Better wind protection ? Do you use a stock windscreen?

300 miles! That wouldn't help me much, I have to stop for a pee break well before that.

I've got an Aeroflow on the K1200LT too. I generally start looking for gas around 200 miles. Typically from New York on my first day I'll start with a full tank, and gas up twice on the road. That gets me to Dillon, SC and "South of the Border." On Day 2 I'll fill up at Pedro's, stop in Savannah for lunch at the Hooters next to the Harley dealership, tank up and then next stop is Daytona Beach.

I can last the duration of a tank or close to 4 hours but typically do no more than 2 hours because of fatigue. I know I will get grief on this but I think you need to gve your head a break as attention is down a bit at about that point. Typically I/we take 5 at the point. My ass likes a short break from the Kevlar lined jeans too after about 5 hours!

At roughly 100 miles I'll stand up and do some stretching, roll my shoulders, neck, etc. to keep the blood flowing, based on traffic conditions of course. This way I can stretch but keep moving. I also tend to have a good breakfast and a good dinner, but just "graze" at gas stops. Using this technique I've clicked off many consecutive 600 - 700 mile days without a problem.

Again, on the K1200LT. I can't sit QUITE that long on the C650GT and the range on a tank of gas doesn't allow it in any event.

I must be out of my mind. I plan on riding my C650GT from coast to coast starting this Friday. Maybe I should change that plan. I have 4 weeks to complete the tour. Jaime may have the right idea and just take the motorcycle. I decided to do this for the challenge.

If I had more than one bike I would take the one with the best comfort for a trip like that. Yes you are out of your mind, what do you have that would be more comfortable?

I say "Go for it." Had I NOT been off two wheels for as long as I was, I would've taken the scooter to Daytona Beach. As it is, I'll be (once again) riding the scooter to Indianapolis next month for the MotoGP races.

I don't have anything else. Maybe I should have bought something else. I have a very comfy Corbin seat and backrest on the scooter. We will see what happens starting Friday.

Scooterdog - When I had a 250 Vespa I would hang on the Modern Vespa website a lot. I can tell you a lot of guys on that site actually did cross country trips as well, although I'm not sure how they could do it. The longest I have done on my 650GT is around 200 miles and at 57 I was feeling it and I think I'm in pretty good shape. Not sure how old you are but excited to hear how it go's if you decide to go forward. Be safe!

What you have is always the best bike for the trip. There is nothing wrong with taking your GT, it's the most comfortable bike you have. With the Corbin seat and back rest you should be fine and have a good ride!! Wish I had the time to do that ride now.

I am about to take a trip from NYC to the end of Blue Ridge Parkway in NC (Cherokee) then off to Virginia beach then home.

Day 1: NYC to Philly (98 miles)
Day 2: Philly to Front Royal via I95 (209 miles) plus Skyline Drive to Waynesboro,VA (109 miles) Total: 318 miles that day
Day 3: Waynesboro,VA to half way point of Blue Ridge Parkway (233miles)
Day 4: Second leg of Blue Ridge (233 miles)
Day 5: Cherokee, NC to Chapel Hill (270 Miles - main road I think)
Day 6:Chapel Hill, NC to Virginia Beach (not sure which road yet) (214 miles on main road)
Day 7: Virginia Beach to NYC (362 miles on main road - not sure which road to take, might do a ferry ride for part of it)

Any advice or tips is appreciated. I leave Sunday.

You should try to work in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel. Nice ride! Helps avoid the major cluster-**** around Washington, DC too.
