Garmin Zumo XT

Hi Guys. Can anyone help ? I would like to hardwire a Garmin Zumo XT to my 2020 C400X. I’m lead to believe it can be done & there is a socket somewhere under the handlebars / fairing ? ( not sure of the exact location ) and I would need an adapter known as a repair plug ? Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Rob.

RobP, do you have a mount in mind for your XT?

There is a power connector under the handle bar fairings you can use.

Hi , yes I do have a mount. A bar that’s sits in front of my screen.
is the connector actually inside the plastic cover on the handlebars or behind the side fairing ? Many thanks.

Hi again. I'm curious about this connector, too. You're not talking about the connectors inside the right cubby, correct?

I removed the handlebar covers a couple of months ago, and didn't notice an extra connector floating around. Is this something that's present only if you have "nav prep" (or whatever it's called) from the factory?

Hi buddy. No , I’m not talking about the power supply in the glove box ( I use that for charging my phone) I spoke to BMW and they said there should be another power supply somewhere under the handlebars or fairing , but he wasn’t sure exactly where ? If I can locate it , he said I would need an adaptor ( white plug with three wires ) called a repair plug. That would then connect to the Zumo XT lead & plug into that power supply.
just wondered if anyone had actually found or used the other power supply. Thanks.

Interesting. Thanks for the detailed info.

Please refer to the attached photo for connecter. BMW Motorrad also sells the end which fits into connector.

Sorry I don’t have the part number.

Do you happen to know if that's a 12V supply, as opposed to 5V (which is what I think a Zumo might use, if the plug is meant for that)? I know, I can measure it the next time I take the handlebar covers off (assuming I spot the plug, per your photo), but I was just wondering if you knew.

And what do you suppose the third wire is for, if it's as @RobP stated above?

I was thinking that this might be a good power source for adding Skene LEDs up front (if it's a normal 12V).

Hi byee.
Thanks for the photo. Really helpful.
Does the centre silver plastic cover just pop off or is their a screw under the BMW badge ?

Hi

It's 12V switched from the ignition, well it is on my C650 Sport anyway so would assume the same for most models

Thank you very much for that link. I just bought it (with the relevant change from pounds to dollars). Here's the shorter form of that link:

BTW:

1) I found a few of them, but they all seem to come from this one seller in Germany, WhileLightsForBikes: https://www.ebay.com/str/whitelightsledlightsforbikes

2) So there are positive and ground wires, and a third wire you just ignore, correct?

When things warm up (outside and in my garage) in the spring, I'll take the handlebar covers off my '22 C 400 GT -- something I've done once before, when doing some through-the-dash farkling -- and look for the matching OEM plug. I didn't notice it before, but I wasn't looking for anything, either. Then, assuming I find it, and assuming that that plug I just ordered matches up, I'll put a voltmeter on the wires of that ebay plug and confirm what's going on.

If all of this checks out, I plan to use this to power some Skene fender-bolt-mounted LEDs, the conspicuity kind, not driving lights (I haven't ridden at night in years) that I bought a couple of months ago: https://skenelights.com/photon-booster-led-modules-pair.html

Thanks again for pointing out the proper plug.

Hi, yea just ignore the 3rd. It's a control wire when a beemer sat nav is fitted.
I've started the installation of Skene's Photon Boosters, https://skenelights.com/photon-booster-led-modules-pair.html, on my C 400 GT, and will have a full write-up -- pics and captions -- in my web gallery probably next week. I'll start a new thread documenting that farkle shortly thereafter.

In the meantime, as I indicated a couple of posts ago, I bought that adapter, found the unused stock plug, have started the work, and have this documentation to add, if anyone comes across this thread in the future.

Here's another pic of the unused stock female plug, which is cable-tied to the rear brake line underneath the handlebar cover:

And here's a pic of the back side of the male aftermarket sat nav adapter (which I double-loop-cable-tied in the same spot), connected to the stock plug, and with some annotation that I added:

2023-03-15_18-11-27 2.jpeg

The red arrow denotes the ignition-on battery-voltage lead, i.e. the hot side; the black arrow shows the ground wire; and the yellow arrow shows the wire to be ignored if you're just looking for a standard power source (that to-be-ignored yellow-arrowed wire, if you're curious, is actually an ignition-on c. 8V source, according to my measurement, presumably used for some function by an actual OEM sat nav).

One last note: that red-designated wire stays hot for 60 seconds after the ignition is turned off -- I timed it -- if that matters to anyone looking for a standard power source (as opposed to the headlights on my '22 C 400 GT, which stay on for about eight seconds after power off).

Thanks @byee, @RobP, and @Grahamr, for pointing me in the right direction, making my life a little easier, etc.

I'm interested in the bar mount for the XT that you mentioned. Can you explain how it attaches and where to purchase them? A pic would be great too if you don't mind. Thanks!

Thu is the one I have installed on my C400GT

Downloadable instructions will show how it’s mounted.

I don’t suggest the cheaper Chinese copies available. Poorly made - mounting tabs in the incorrect angle, mounting screws were too short, thinner metal, lower quality all around.

My friend bought one and I helped him remount correctly. Effort and frustration to mount not worth the savings.

Good luck

BMW also sells the cable for $20CDN

That one worked fine for me as well. One nice surprise, at least in my package, were two cross bars; one was 12mm and the other was 22mm. I wound up using the smaller one because I thought it looked better and also because I already had a Zumo XT mount for 12mm bars. I also had, from a previous BMW bike, the BMW repair plug which conveniently plugged into the existing connector under the handlebar cover. This all makes for a very neat installation.
