Older brother in West Palm said it was a non-event for them. Younger brother in New Smyrna beach said it was a real mess around his place (Daytona Beach area). Friend in Hilton Head also had a tough go of it. Here's a tongue in cheek picture of some of his neighbors in their gated community.

The resort I originally planned on staying was apparently severely damaged along with most of A1A. I booked a hotel on the west coast in Clearwater but unfortunately never got to use it. Seems the roads between Dillon, SC (South of the Border) and Lumberton, NC were completely impassable. I tried Monday night and again Tuesday morning but they were taking people off the southbound I-95 and putting them right back on the northbound side at Exit 31.

I ended up canceling my reservation (fortunately without any penalties) and instead I'm visiting friends in Virginia and Pennsylvania on this trip. Worst part of Monday night was not being able to find a working hotel with vacancies until I backtracked all the way to Fayetteville... and that hotel was a DUMP (but at least it had a vacancy).

That's an extra 60 or so miles you didn't need. I understand things are pretty much cleaned up down in Hilton Head, SC.

I've a friend who lives in Folly Beach, SC. He evacuated during the storm but is back now with power and internet connectivity. He said he was expecting a LOT worse, but things aren't so bad there now. Just read some news reports regarding Lumberton. Apparently the problem was river flooding. Even after the storm had passed through the rivers were still rising. It'll be some time before it all drains away and at least there isn't any rain in the forecast for the next several days. The photos I saw online were incredible. No wonder every road I tried ended up going under water!!
