Ok so I purchased a 2016 c650 sport. Immaculate in appearance with 10400 miles about a month and a half ago. What do you know.Timing chain jumps and valves and pistons and cylinder casing they telling me needs to be replace at a cost of 4500 dollars. I just spent about 7400 with tax for the bike and added a 400 slip on. I asked the dealer to talk to BMW to see if they can help in any way. This is ridiculous. I'm pissed to say the least.

Ouch. I sure hope they make it right. I just read a similar story on FB. Guy ended up having to pay for the parts and BMW paid for the labor.

"One week later haven't got a call back yet. You think no news is good news?"

With a dealer, no news usually means your bike is 9th in line and nobody's paying attention. Nothing prevents you from contacting BMW directly. I suspect you'll have much better response. Tell BMW you are very concerned and you heard they have a great record of standing behind their bikes. Tell the dealer you're contacting BMW and letting the dealer know as a courtesy (which may spur them into action). Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Let me mention this. The dealer where the bike is is not where I purchased it. But the response I was given was that bmw will not help with this. The total estimate I was given was...get this...
$20,683.00.
I'm hiring an attorney first thing Monday morning.

First, doesn't matter where you purchased it. You can go to any authorized BMW Motorrad dealer.

Secondly, how on earth can it cost $20k to repair an $11k bike? I'd be eager to quote that figure to BMW and see what they say. And I'd put zero credibility in the dealer's comment that BMW will not help. They have no clue what BMW will do. BMW will decide. They're at 800-831-1117. BMW has power over the dealer. An attorney will have to win power in a drawn out process that you cost you lots of money, IF you win.

I've read many stories on this forum where BMW has gone to the wall and beyond for customers. Particularly in situations like yours (might be) where the chain tensioner failed and killed the engine. That happened a lot and BMW had a major recall.

Yea I'm going to call bmw before I take any action. But I will not just let this go. Clearly from all the articles on this forum and others and online that I have read these tensioner are defective and it seems to me that the 2015s on should have had the hydraulic tensioners installed like was used on the recall of earlier models. Its also obvious that the dealership doesn't want any part of this repair. Monday I was quoted 4500.oo (15 hrs labor at 165.00 per hour plus parts) Today I'm quoted 20k plus.
Whats up with that. We will see. I'm going to call and discuss this with customer service at bmw. Also from what I have read it seems like the 4500 was about what it takes to make this repair for others who have had this happen. If bmw would meet half way and pick up parts or labor I'd be happy with that. But I'm not letting this dealer work on the scooter any further. I will.bring it to another dealer.

I looked over the estimate again and I stand to be corrected. The correct estimate is 10500 for a new engine or 9200 for the top end repair. Still way off mark but I added the two together sorry.

It was a mid-2016 model year change to switch over to the hydraulic tensioner exclusively. No "shoulds" about it.

Source: BMW Service Manual, and I have a 2016 with the older version that I'm monitoring closely.

Did it have the hydraulic chain tensioner or the 2nd Generation mechanical tensioner? It should have been making a noise ahead of time as a warning. Bmw won’t do anything if you had the 2nd gen tensioner. At least they didn’t for me. I hope you have better luck.

Mine is a 2016 (new design) but the tensioner started making noise at around 2,500 miles irregardless and BMW replaced it under warranty in 2018.

Mine was 2014 and had 2nd gen tensioner mechanical. It started making noise and found out it was tensioner.
I had the shops call and fight to get mine replaced. They called for over 6 weeks and finally was shutdown by BWM Germany.
I paid $1200 for the hydraulic upgrade.
This was the 2nd one. The first scooter I had was 2015 and did what yours did to the motor. Complete loss and now selling for parts.

This happened to me about a year ago, except the slip was not enough to do permanent damage. The dealer had nothing to say about whether it would happen again.
