After more digging the rear strainer needs cleaning. The front strainer needs to be replaced with this pipe. Where is the front strainer located? Has nobody done this when it needs to be done?

No clue. The oil filter screen (item #2) is the only thing I've seen when changing the oil. I pretty much just make sure there's nothing obvious on the screen before reinstalling it.

Just left the dealer with oil, filter and plastic pipe. It is correct, the front screen is for break in only. At 600 miles you pull the screen and replace it with a plastic tube. The rear screen stays and is serviced with oil changes.

Pigpenracing is correct. I replaced the front screen with the pick up tube. You can use the parts lists on the BMW site to find locations, PN's, or get a service manual disc.

There is a black plug just below the black cover aft of the oil filter. That's where the forward screen is that is replaced by the oil pick up tube. Once you make the change, you don't take out that plug again, draining the oil with the side plug , lower and forward of the oil filler and the plug underneath the engine.
