Pictures now Available windshields that won't break the bank

I'm sure this has been covered at length and in depth but I have a new player. I will be able to compare 2 replacement, aftermarket windshields to the stock offering. One is the "Ermax" and the other isn't in my hands yet but will come from a company that is VERY well liked (judging from the feed back) by the K and R crowds......I have contacted 7Jurock and asked if they offer a C650GT replacement, was told they do not but could make one, I explained that if their screens for the 650 worked as well as those for the K and R models that I would post on the forums and felt like they could expect additional orders. I have sent my OEM screen to their company and they will use it to make a replacement for me, but I think that has been upgraded to make a mold for future orders. I told them they could keep my OEM screen if they felt it would benefit future orders or help them in any way. My screen is due in their hands next Tuesday and from there they will need 5 to 14 days to make the replacement and get it shipping back to me, after this first one order fulfillment should be much faster.

NOW; I've put about 200 miles on the Ermax now and can say the wind noise is less, the helmet buffeting is reduced with the screen in a lower position, the optics on the screen I purchased are very clear and sharp but the wind hitting my arms has increased. That isn't a terrible trade off, hitting me in the arms has been more comfortable than getting my head pushed in several directions, and less noise is worth extra wind on my arms (not at an uncomfortable level) but I like to ride in cold weather so the Ermax may be better suited for summer. I felt the shipping costs were a little high, but we get spoiled by free shipping from so many companies that it may just be perspective and it's actually "fair" to sell the product and let shipping fall where it may, rather than add it to the cost of a product and call it "free". Protection from light rain was improved (got caught is a 03:30 shower on my way to work yesterday) chest, head and back were dryer than usual, but again, arms were slightly more wet even pulling in my elbows. Mounting the screen wasn't hard (only 4 screws) but I needed to screw one side down and "bow" the screen to get the other side to line up. This may be "normal" or it may have sat in a hot warehouse since it was made in 2018 and possibly lost some of it's contour. Still, an improvement over stock, and I feel taller riders would also benefit from this screen as well (like I said, it works well at a much lower setting than the original). I will be interested in comparing the 7Jurock to the Ermax and the OEM. The only dog I'll have in this hunt is which of the three gives me the most comfortable ride, I am purchasing both screens and will share MY thoughts on the screens to give you MY opinion of the three, listing where I feel each of the aftermarket does a good job, and where they may be lacking, YMMV.

I considered waiting until I had the 7Jurock and had been able to compare it to the Ermax, but figured if others (like myself) were wanting a screen it would be nice to know there will soon be a new offering from an established company to choose from.

Not what you asked but I have the Laminar Lip on my stock windscreen and it does a nice job.
I did try the add on screen extender, did help some, but I didn't like the hardware in my line of sight, I looked at the Laminar and felt I would be looking through the screen at the bottom of the lip and that would catch my eye, I'm really hoping the 7jurock will tic all the boxes and be as popular for the scooters as they are for the K and R models. I've put another 200 or so miles on the scoot since the post above, got a phone call while riding and I could hear MUCH better, but she couldn't hear me, still had to stop to make the call, so, yes an improvement, but not the complete answer. Wearing a 3/4 face helmet doesn't help either, but it's 6 years old and am beginning to look at modular Bluetooth options.

As for shields that won't break the bank, on my 2014 Sport, I tried the Ermax touring (taller) shield, and had 3 complaints.

  1. Bent backward too far at highway speeds, and thus didn't help with head buffeting as much as I hoped.
  2. Must be at least a millimeter thinner than the stock shield, which explains the bending, but also led to stress cracks starting at 2 of the screw points on the lower-third of the screen.
  3. When I did finally replace the Ermax with a Givi screen, the Ermax screws had stripped so badly between my use of thread lock and their cheap aluminum alloy that I had to take a hacksaw to them to pop the heads off and clean house in prep for the Givi.
The price was right, but the experience was wrong. :(

Something I recently learned while searching other forums is that Givi has a cheaper sister brand, KAPPA, that is run by the daughter of the family that owns Givi. The wrinkle is that when it comes to windscreens, they just ship the same Givi kit with KAPPA stickers slapped on top of the Givi logo, for 50%-60% of the prices Givi charges. Even the installation instructions are Givi-branded.

So, if I decide to go cheap on a windscreen again, KAPPA will be my choice.

The 7Jurock is still a work in progress, received the prototype today and installed it, much wider above the mirrors than the stock or the Ermax, but too wide at the mirrors (would hit if I raised the screen too much) BUT, even not able to raise the screen but about 3/4" it reduced the buffeting beyond that of the Ermax and the wider screen kept the stream off my arms. It looks great on the scoot (got a light grey tint) and bolted right up to the front of the scoot, no manipulation needed. It was obvious they were trying to control air at the bottom of the screen, but I took pictures and pointed out the wind deflectors that do a good job of controlling that. Their first attempt was 22" across at the mirrors, I sent them a dimension of 19 to 19.5" at the mirrors. I suspect the pictures I originally sent with my OEM screen weren't clear enough of the mirror clearance to allow them to make the first one without a scoot there to measure.
Honestly, I'm impressed. They want to do as good a job as possible and offer a product that works better than the rest. I can see why the K and R riders are so high on them, stay tuned, we're close.

So you raised the screen up by about 4 inches or so? Can you still see over it when its in the lowest position?

Very cool project. I ended up getting this. At 6' 1" my eyes were a couple of inches over the top of the stock screen. This new one it is at least 3 or more inches above my eyes. Much better riding...

I looked at the V-stream too, had settled on the "Sport/Tour" (I'm 5'9") but not all the people who purchased them were happy, I was trying to hit a $150.00 price point and get something that works, the Ermax met the price point (before shipping) and gave me one of the aftermarkets to compare, with all the good reviews of the 7Jurock I really wanted them to make one and I'm quite willing to be the Guinea Pig as well as tie up $300-$400.00 to help others with another option. To be honest, not everyone who purchases a product will be happy with it, the Ermax had it's good points, and in some parts of the country a little more wind on the arms could be a good thing, some won't feel a need for a better screen and are quite happy with the OEM, I realize the OEM is the factory compromise to try and fit "everyone". On the VTX1800R I had just before the scooter I played with the screen, lower fork mounted screens, different adjustments to the main screen trying to get a quite, calm saddle and couldn't, enter the BMW and the stock offering was better that the Honda, but still not quite what I wanted and as I caught the maintenance up I started playing with the screen and seat to make my commute more comfortable. Well, we'll see, the 7Jurock is so close to checking all my boxes and it's only raised about 3/4" and I'm about 4" above the top of the screen and have very little wind now, once they get the mirror clearance figured out and I can raise the screen another 3/4' to 1" I think this will be the one I want, and if not I still haven't ruled out the V-Stream. I just enjoy tinkering, and she who must be obeyed puts up with it, so I get to keep playing....

Interesting discussion. I am toying with the idea of a different screen. The OEM in the tallest position is just above my eye level and cuts out most of the buffeting, but not all. A couple more inches and I would think that all the wind would be cut which is great in the winter or riding in rain. I still like being able to drop the screen down to where I can get the breeze if I want it and to be able to see the road directly.

I had a Vstream on the last bike, a R12RT and I liked that screen. Very clear optics and thick enough so that there is no vibration at speed.

My last GIVI on a Silverwing was not all that clear, you could see through it well enough, but it wasnt like looking through a car windshield.

I'm just at about 1000 miles on the bike now and with Winter coming soon, I'll probably be motivated to get something bigger to keep me riding till the warm weather returns. Of course its going to hit the 60's today so I'm going to get my ride in and take advantage of the temps while I can.

I bought a Givi brand for my Yamaha YP 400. Is was a direct replacement for the OEM that was hazy ( after12yrs). Anyway it bolted right on, doesn’t buck ,shake or anything it’s not supposed to do. I run 70-75 on freeways a lot. I see just right over it. No buffeting and rain goes over my helmet. Cost about $150 much better than stock. IMO.

New screen from 7jurock is in route, narrowed at the mirrors so I can raise and lower the screen (was ready to take a scroll saw to the one on the bike just to make sure everything else was good). They told me to wait, not to cut it and the new one will be here before the end of the year. They are honestly concerned and want the customer happy, I'll be curious as to what the cost will be once the design is fingered out....and as stated, this one works as well as or better than the Ermax even not able to raise more than 3/4".

New screen arrived and installed, I had about a 20 minute ride with new version, I LIKE IT! But it is a little early yet, I want to make the morning ride to work up the Interstate, and the warmer afternoon ride back home, I still see about 2 inches over the screen, my head is out of the slipstream, it's calm around my arms, screen is stable, can be a little disconcerting looking through the screen at the ground by the tire as the focus isn't as good as the OEM, but with the bow from left to right and the slight bend from mount to top with the added "flip" at the top, it won't be as clear as the flat screens. I noticed it a little on the first version, as I'm able to raise the screen a little more it is still there but not as bad. Once again, this is MY opinion, I paid for the screens so I could decide for myself which I like best and share with you WHY I like or dislike which screen, so if you're wanting a screen maybe my experience will help get you a working screen the first time and save you a little money. Nothing but good things to say about the folks at 7Jurock, they listened to my comments, and requests, offered suggestions based on their manufacturing experience with multiple models and I like the result. I don't know if they are open between Christmas and New Year, But I will try and get from them a final price on this unit, they also offer clear, light grey (mine, and I like it) a darker tint and others I think...Merry Christmas, enjoy your families and celebrate3 the season!

Rode in to work this morning, 33 degrees, screen works great, raised to where I can just see over it and no wind buffeting, stable at 75 - 80 on the Interstate (it's Georgia and I was just keeping up with traffic), snow mobile gloves and light winter silk layer. To me, a much better than stock screen, more cold weather comfortable than the Ermax, not the focal clarity of a flat screen, but not at all bad (to me, others will be bothered) and of the three I've been behind on this scoot, hands down the best. I will call California today and see if they have a final cost for orders. Will try and post pictures this evening when I get home. I've enjoyed this, I hope it may help some of you.

I spoke with a very nice lady from 7Jurock today on my ride back home, I explained I was trying to get a final price for the windshield so I could inform the forums. the owner is out today, they had talked about it yesterday after one of the guys in Russia who had been reading this write up and called and tried to order one. By tomorrow they hope to have a product number, or part number, list the available tints and colors and have a price listed. It may take them a day or two to get it on their website but this is definitely a new product that they will offer. If the site is slow about posting the new product their website has a phone number and email to contact them, the lady who usually handles the phone is out sick (has been all week) and being in California the company is having to deal with covid restrictions.

The lady I was talking to seems excited to include our scoots in their line up, and EVERY interaction I've had with anyone with the company has been great. I'm sure the sport models have a different screen, if a sport rider wanted to contact them and offer his OEM screen for mold measurements, your screen would be returned, they offered to return my screen and I told them I wouldn't need it back, they could save that postage and use the OEM as a "check" for Quality Control. All told, I've enjoyed this, I ended up with a great screen, was able to help out a company on the other coast, and have someone from the other side of the world wanting one of the screens I asked to get made....and I hope they sell many more, for themselves and those who want a great option for a screen. I expect an email tomorrow telling me final price, if it hasn't made their website, I'll post what I can.

7Jurock is having to close for a few days (possibly up to 3 weeks) due to a Covid case within their family, others are having the test done to see if it's spread. If you can wait, I've sent them pictures of my scoot with their screen mounted, and once they are able to open back up for their "day to day" they will again be taking orders. As of right now, they are working on shipping orders they have had and processed and are informing new orders of the delay. When I get home today I'll see if I can't post the pictures, I think you'll like it.

You all Might take a look at the CALSCI windscreens... Buffeting is ZERO!! with this thing. The stock windscreen was one of my biggest pet peeves about this bike but this shield solved it. That and the Seat (but that's another topic). I'm running the tall one as I don't mind looking through the screen, although I can bring it down all the way and look over it, and I don't mind not looking "cool". My needs and personal preference was comfort on long (300+ mile) rides and their windshield has done very well for me. www.calsci.com
