Riding at slow speeds (in congestion)

Hello, I was always wondering, if I am forced to ride in walking-pace speeds in a traffic jam, or even have to move uphill at this speed, and if I have to do this often, e.g. few times a week while commuting, is it going to have an effect on wear of some components? I can imagine that clutch just keeps slipping because it is too slow to engage fully. Is there a technique how to ride at such slow speeds? Thanks

The vision of having to ride in such traffic for any length of time makes my heart hurt. But I wouldn't worry about excessive wear on this machine. If you actually follow the recommended maintenance intervals, you'll (it will) be fine.

Split lanes if its legal in your state and if you feel comfortable doing so. I still do it a little, but never go more than 15 mph faster than the slow/stopped traffic-always seems to be some guy or gal who wants to hurt you since he/she is jealous.

Lane filtering is probably the only option, however not always possible.
I don’t think my bike has temperature gauge - is that something what is availlable on 650GT only, and not on 600Sport?

Bigger bikes are great for cruising mid to higher speeds, but if you're stuck in inner city gridlock I'd be opting for something 200-300cc that allows you to lane split easily.

^I agree on this^ I alway have to deal with bumper-to-bumper traffic here in new York, and I'm ok with it because I have not rush to get home any way. I like to enjoy the freedom feel of a bike rede a cross. The bike is to wide for line split.

My BMW G310R was the same width as the C650, so lane splitting was about the same experience, space-wise. I prefer the C650 because, although heavier than a small displacement bike, the ease of pulling away and accellerating fast from any speed or position makes heavy city traffic a relative breeze. I am so used to riding in heavy traffic now that I can go very slow to almost a stop without having to put a foot down. I don't worry about the clutch.

Been doing this for 20yrs in the SF Bay Area...aint nobody been "jealous" enough to go to jail in front of a handful of dash cameras.

The 650gt fits here nicely. Better than the Burgman.

Not here in N.Y. lines are to narrow, so Split lanes with GT is to easy.

Lane splitting / sharing is allowed in most instances in Japan. I do it daily.

My GT is a dream in traffic - a bit wider than some bikes but the fold in mirrors are just great.

Great visibility, will simply crawl along at a slow walking speed, or sprints into gaps.

Your interstates and state highways are the same size as everyone elses.

lesser roads are up to your own local rules, but still usually standard as everyone elses. Same trucks use em...

Not where I ride, The belt Pkwy is for car only, not truck allow.
