Really? Never noticed. I prefer having the glove boxes and just using the bluetooth speakers in my Nolan helmet though.

In helmet speakers are the way to go in my opinion. Even with earplugs the sound is nice. Plus the added benefit of intercom and telephony

I had a Honda Pacific Coast 800 with external speakers they worked great and you were also aware of what was going on around you traffic, emergency vehicles, etc. the girl friend uses ear buds and Ipod, It drives me crazy when I pull up next to her and she has to fumble with the buds so she can talk to me a a stop light So we can decide if we should stop for coffee or to get gas etc.

I have tried just about everything to hear my music. The problem comes with high speeds when speakers and helmet speakers just don't make it. The other consideration is how rude it is to make more noise then necessary, does everyone along your ride want to hear your radio at full blast. I don't think so, I know I don't want to hear your speakers!!
I use ear buds and find the sound acceptable at highway speeds, plus they cut down on tiring wind noise. I live in Massachusetts and believe you can legally wear one ear bud. I know there are sites on the internet where you can get single ear buds with a stereo plug, so you hear both channels. ear buds might cut down on the spoken voice, yet, they certainly aren't any worse for hearing traffic then todays cars. You are supposed to pay attention to your surroundings when you drive, you are supposed to be scanning front sides and rear constantly, driving like you are invisible. Your constant attention is what will save you, if someone doesn't see you they won't honk anyway.

Get a set of communicators, she can listen to her iPod through them and when you want to talk to her she can hear you.

Tell her not to play her music so damned LOUD through her ear buds. She's going to damage her hearing.

Well, either riding or listening to music/chatting on a phone.
There are plenty of drivers, who force us, riders, to exercise caution, I rather be safe…
When I am listening to music I do appreciate the quality of the sound, which is unachievable on external speakers. I purchased preowned 2016 with radio/speakers. I had all these removed during the service, left the system as a payment for removal. The guy was happy, and so was I…
