Touring on C650GT

I have not been on this forum in quite a while, but over a year and a half ago I posed a question. Could one ride across the USA on a C650GT. I questioned my sanity when I was thinking about doing this. Well, I rode the scooter just over 6100 miles from Rocklin, CA to Virginia Beach, VA and back. My wife road here BMW R1150RT. Some say she was smart, and maybe she was, but I had a blast on the scooter most of the time.

We traveled on U.S. highways and Interstates. I80 from Rocklin to Reno, and then we crossed Nevada on U.S. 50. I70 across Utah to Grand Junction, CO and U.S. 50 across CO to Colorado Springs. From Colorado Springs it was all Interstate ( I76 to I80) the Chicago area. The scooter never missed a beat over Donner Summit, U.S. 50 summits across Nevada, Monarch Pass in CO. On the open Interstate the scooter did fine. Luckily we did not encounter strong winds across the Great Plains. From Chicago area we traveled to Indianapolis(I65), Beckley, WV, Virginia Beach.

The scooter has some shortcomings as with all machines. The suspension HATES sharp heaves in the pavement. The jolt I would receive was quite harsh. The scoot reacts quicker to cross winds than a standard motorcycle. I had to correct it more than my wife did on her RT on our return across Nevada on I80. I carried an extra gallon of gas due to the small fuel tank, however I never needed it. I did not have one mechanical issue with the scooter, and it did not need oil.

These are really good scooters. I would like to see BMW add an electronic cruise control, maybe a music option, and a quieter engine.

Great stuff! Glad your trip went well. I pretty much agree with your assessments on wind. By BV350 scooter handles crosswinds better than my C600 Sport, solo. Though, riding two-up and fully loaded, the winds hardly affected the bike which is a plus. Thanks for posting and don't be a stranger.

Mine has the "Music Option." The GPS has an 8Gb external memory card loaded with my MP3 collection. I listen to it all the time when I ride.

On my way home from the Gaspe' Quebec, via Prince Edward Island. The Sport is a capable tourer too. Unfortunately, this site won't let me post pictures anymore!!

374 miles today, not a record, but, enough!! Bucksport Maine tonight.

Did you stop in Drummondsville to try the poutine at Le Roy Jucep? They claim to have invented the dish...

I didn't stop there, but, might have if I knew it was there. I must say that 98% of the food I ate there was good.
