Who has Chain Rails?

I bought a used c650gt weeks ago. The bike is in decent shape but the chain on the rear drive is loose, so I'm reluctant to ride it much. I ordered chain rails (tensioners) from Bike Bandit. But they aren't shipping (or responding). Then I started looking around at dealerships. I would have thought a maintenance item like that wouldn't be so hard to find. But I'm having a hell of a time finding someone who actually has them for sale.

Anyone know a good source for chain rails? It looks like at least a 3 week wait no matter where you order them from....

I don't have any spares but try MaxBMW. I've gotten stuff from them during the shelter-in-place stuff. Super easy to install, albeit a little messy.

They finally came from two suppliers. When the first shipment was delayed I panicked and ordered from another supplier. Now I have two sets. If you need a set, send me a pm!

I bought mine at the dealer first I bought #2 & #3. When I installed #3 I then bought #4 and will be installing it at the end of the season. I am replacing them at 25000km not the recommended 20000km when I hit 100000km I will then replace the chain and then install #1 back in

Do not throw them out they are reusable

Each time I do the adjuster (spacer) I do the belt

Can any one explain the difference between the different numbers/stages? I was told by BMW that I need to change the chain rail to #2 but not sure what the differences are

The scooter comes with #1. The higher the number the more it tightens the chain. So it your #1 is loose, a #2 should fix it. If it loosens more, go to #3. Loosens up again, then #4. If It's still lose with #4,t then its probably time for a new chain.

IMHO the scooter should come with the three other rails....

Hey Ben, I just installed number two today, from the second set you purchased and I purchased from you, am at 20,000 miles and IIRC you're allowed 1/2" play, the scooter was just there, number 2 tightened it right up.

Just did my own, not hard or complicated, you'll need 740ml of synthetic 75W90, the 2 dot (#2) rail, possibly a gasket, long torx bits and about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I removed my rear tire so the catch pan was under the rear drive and super cleaned the wheel while it was off. Expect your first change to be really dirty (chain assembly lube that gets washed off in the gear oil), also checked brake linings and cleaned everything I can't normally reach due to tire. I purchased chain rails from Ben, 2, 3 and 4, you'll need to keep the rails you take off as they can be re-used with a new chain. I cheated and bought the Harbor Freight motorcycle lift so it's much easier now (after both kee replacements, a rebuilt shoulder, neck and back surgery and foot surgery I needed to get off the floor).

This is interesting, the CD I purchased has the screen shot I posted, the on line down load that I also purchased has the screen shot from AAWW, is there a definitive answer form a known accurate source? The CD is from "BMW Motors" BMW Motorrad workshop, the download was from the internet (and we know they're NEVER wrong). I didn't bother measuring the oil I removed, had I noticed this before I would have....

Went and had a closer look, the Cd is dated 032013, the on line version is dated 032014, the later version shows the lesser amount of gear oil, maybe a change from lessons learned? The local BMW motorcycle shop closed, Freedom Motorsports dropped them across their company, I don't have a BMW shop I can ask that's closer than 65 miles.

As a follow up (never one to not admit I'm wrong) even though the amounts shown were accurate in all posts, when I went with the 750ml my chain drive developed a leak, this may be the "lesson learned" that caused BMW to reduce the amount to 500ml. I have a new seal already, the gasket should be here Monday; here we go again....
