YSS Rear Suspension Upgrade

I upgraded my rear suspension with YSS shocks. I considered the Ohlins but decided not to because of the price…..$1,100 USD vs $510USD for the YSS.

I only ordered the rear shocks and not the front cartridges. Wasn’t sure if the costs justifies the costs….cost of the YSS cartridges and installation fees.
Unlike the rears, the fronts only have a compression setting with no rebound.

I’ve ridden about 700km on my C400GT since I’ve installed the YSS rear shocks. There’s been a significant increase in how the bike handles and rides. I’m now getting absolutely no air time….my butt now spends all its time sitting on the seat in contrast to the OEM .

Because the bike no longer stutters on the occasional washboard like roadways and the bumps…..the YSS has definitely increased my confidence leaning into the turns.

The shocks were super easy to install.

I’m now on the process to fine tuning the rear suspension. I put a zap strap on the rear shaft to see how much travel is being used. After a 150km ride, I’m finding the rear is utilizing 80% of the 4” travel and sometimes 100%

Is it normal for the rear shocks to utilize 80% of the rear travel and sometimes 100%? I have adjusted the compression settings but not the rebound yet. I started off with both the compression and rebound set to the middle. Compression is now set to middle less 1 click.

I’m planning on tweaking the rebound setting over the next few days. Definitely keep you posted on my progress and opinions

I’m enjoying the rear shocks. My C400GT is now a different bike soaking up all the bumps.

Where did you order and what is the part number?

Man I wish I saw this before. I ordered a pair of Yacugar emulsion shocks for the rear. The ride is great but they were twice the price. What is the YSS front shock option?

@byee: while we're discussing the YSS, I have a question for you (because I'm considering buying those shocks over the winter).

What's involved in changing the preload? I ask, because I change the stockers -- from five clicks back to three -- when riding with my wife (which happens every so often), vs. when riding solo. Do you have to just turn a collar a bunch of times? Is there an easy way to note, or make marks or something, to revert to prior preload settings? Or do you just count turns, or something along those lines?

When the shocks are mounted….the preload ring is located at the bottom. I’ve never had to adjust it.

It may be difficult to adjust with the tommy bars provided because of the lack of space.

That's a little disappointing, but thanks for the info.

I may see what a Hyperpro set costs, because -- at least for certain bikes -- they have an optional "Hydraulic Preload Adjuster."

Unfortunately you will encounter the same problem with the Hyperpro’s with the preload adjusters

YSS does have a front option but I wasn’t comfortable taking apart the front forks or worth paying BMW Motorrad to install…$275.

Front kit only provides a compression adjustment. I may have considered if there was a compression and rebound adjustment.

The stock front suspension works fine as is unlike the rear suspension.

Ted Porter at Beemer Shop doesn't recommend new front springs unless you are bottoming out, but says you can try a heavier fork oil if you want more dampening.

Looks like the designers of these never put them on a real bike… 🤨. Looks like you could rotate the right side shock 180 and put the reservoir forward which would allow you to adjust it more easily.

i am looking at the same shocks and my wife and I ride 2 up most times and currently have the factory shocks cranked up as hard as they can go and they still could use some more. I would be curious how they would be for just me or her riding one up with the springs set to where we need it for 2 up? I have not rode the bike by myself with the springs cranked up all the way (still new and only have a few rides in).
