400 Owners:

I recently learned of a Canadian company, Veridian, that makes after-market cruise controls for bikes:

Previously, I was only aware of MC Cruise, https://mccruise.com/ . That's a long-established Australian company, but they don't deal with the C 400, they concentrate on bikes with actual throttle cables, and their products are relatively expensive. Actually, back in 2007, I bought and installed an MC Cruise for my then-new Burgman 650. I have checked in with them in the last few years via a couple of emails, but it looks as if their doing anything for our scooters is not going to happen.

Veridian, on the other hand, specializes in systems based on intercepting throttle-by-wire signals. These systems are therefore much simpler in terms of components, and much less expensive (in the $400 - $600 range).

In any case, as I said, I recently came across them. This was while reading a thread on a Royal Enfield forum (my other current bike), because Veridian is working on a cruise for one of the newer REs (the Himalayan 450); see:

And note what it says on that page: "If you know of a bike with Throttle by Wire that could use Cruse Control please let us know!"

So that's what I did this morning, i.e., I sent them an email -- [email protected] -- informing them that I'd certainly like one for my C 400 GT. I got this response a little while later:

~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Bill. Nice to meet you. We can certainly add that bike to the list. We work mostly on demand, so feel free to share my page around. The more demand for a certain bike, the more likely we are to support it sooner.
We did have F850GS in the shop for a little bit and we were unable to do cruise for it. Just due to the complexity of BMW bikes. Most specifically, the wiring for the throttle runs directly from the ECU to the throttle with no interconnection, so it’s hard to find a place to put a T harness.
However, it is something on the radar, and we will get back to the BMW bikes, perhaps sometime later next year.
So, if you're of like mind, I encourage you to drop them a line, perhaps letting them know that you'd buy one, too, if such a product existed for the C 400. Once again, that's [email protected] . Can you imagine, 50 people a day, walking in, sending an email to Veridian, and walking out? They'd think it's a movement! (Oops, sorry, got carried away a bit there.)
(By the way, I downloaded the 54MB installation manual for a Triumph Tiger 660 Sport, https://veridiancruise.com/product/triumph-tiger-660-sport/ , to look at it. It's almost entirely pics of what bodywork to remove, so you can just plug in one connector from Veridian. This is so trivial compared to the work I did 17 years ago, on my Burgman.)
Thanks for flooding Veridian's inbox.
Seriously, no other C 400 owners are interested in prodding Veridian to make a real cruise control for the bike, at what I feel is a fair price?!
Unfortunately, my 2019 C400GT is old school and not drive by wire.
Adding cruise control would be beneficial for me since most of my rides are about 250km or more.
Hey, thanks for the response.
I actually forgot that the older models used real throttle cables. Do you know what model-year the switch to throttle-by-wire was made?
I just saw your post. I have been away from the forum for a few days.
I just visited their site and saw this on the first page.
BMW
Due to the wiring and software requirements that vary quite a bit from our standard controller and harness setup, we have decided that BMW bikes will be a lower priority for the moment. Once more resources are available, development will continue for BMW bikes. Looking at their hit list is not encouraging but who knows.
  • F850GS
  • 400GT
I left them an email that I would be very interested in cruise for the C400gt scooter. And asked if they would keep me in the loop if they develop something.
Yep, I’ve visited their site a few times since I posted all that.
If they get back to you, I’d be interested in knowing whether they’ve warmed up to working on Beemers.
Thanks for contacting them, in any case.
Yes they have a long list of bikes that they intend to get too and BMW is among them so I wish more people were interested because it looks like the other bikes on their list will be easier to do.
Well bust my buttons! The first reply I got from these guy's was an auto reply. Here is the second reply I got from them. Which is more encouraging. It sounds like they will definitly get to it. Just a matter of when. Based on demand.
Hi Michael,
Yes for sure its on the list and we will get to it in time.
I work mostly on demand so those bikes with more demand will get the priority.
@mgg @wspollack Are we still writing in for this? Or is it now on their radar?
I think every owner of the newer throttle-by-wire C 400s should email them -- [email protected] -- because I'll take the rep/owner at his word. That is, from his response to me (see the first post here):
On their page https://veridiancruise.com/future-bikes/ they have a running total of requests, if I understand it correctly.
If you have never had cruise before you might not know what you are missing. I didn't. I had cruise and an electronic windshield on my Indian Challenger. I did not use the cruise all that much but when I had a long stretch of highway to drive it was so nice. (Most of my riding is in twisties but sometimes you have to ride a ways to get to the twisties and that is when cruise is nice to have.) If your like me your speed will vary a lot without it. I can keep my speed steady if I concentrate on it all the time but I don't want to do that. I want to enjoy the seinory and the ride.
I thought the electronic windshield was such a gimmick, I figured I would set it and forget it. That was not the case. On hot days, doing city driving, I would put that shield down and let the wind cool me off a little. On the highway I would almost always run it all the way up to keep the wind from beating me to death. I used that feature a lot. I hope we get more interest in the cruise. It is number one on my want list.
@wspollack Sent in my request for the C400GT and my 310GS ;)
I'm in to write them as well if I pick up the C400GT. Right now I'm torn - but using some time to try to see if the Kymco AK 575 lands and I have a willing dealer, and even more-so, a willing dealer who will service as well - all of which seems in some doubt. If the Kymco proves to be a challenge (one dealer said they'd order on demand - aka no showroom), I'll probably try and land a 2024 C400GT - and I'll certainly be up for writing Veridian on the cruise.
Regarding the 575, my guess is that it will get to North America, but not until 2026.
I mean, Kymco just announced the bike in November 2024 (https://www.kymco.com/news/2024-eicma-kymco-press-conference-speech-verbatim ), and they typically roll out models in Asia and Europe first, and then NA (if at all). And Kymco USA is still listing the 2023 models on its site (https://kymcousa.com/2023-scooters/ ).
Purchased the AK550 last summer from a NC dealer. They didn't stock those but they got me one in about a week. It's been great but I do wish it could have been the Premium model. Thinking I'll put the 2022 C400GT up for sale next month.
You're not alone, regarding the 550 Premium. The very knowledgeable rider on the Burgman and AdvRider forums, RJS987, has written about that -- the lack of the Premium in North America -- a time or two.
Me, even though the AK 550 was on my radar for a year or so, I'm pretty happy with the 400 Beemer. This undoubtedly has a lot to do with my age -- 77 in a month or so -- because the bike goes about as fast as I'd, and more importantly is light. I now have two bikes: in the yellow trunks, a Meteor 350, weighing 420 lbs., and in the gray trunks, the 400 GT, weighing 470 lbs. So I don't really want to have to move an even heavier bike around the garage.
Actually, the most important consideration was that my wife likes the seating, foot positions, etc., on the 400, which is why I bought it. We still do about 10% of my trips two-up on the Beemer, and it does those okay.
But good luck on your sale of the 400.
