Windshield won't move.

On my thread about a battery problem I mentioned the windshield won't move. I removed the battery for an hour while I installed a replacement. What effect that can have on the windshield I can't imagine. Is there a fuse I could have blown? Any advice?
 
Hey tlippy, I don't have an answer, but I see your location listed as Central Oregon. I am planning a ride next week, up to Burns, John Day, Sisters, and then heading home South to Susanville. Any route advice or scenic advice? I went up to Crater Lake last week, and that was a great ride!! image.webp
 
By allowing the battery to run down completely it is possible the windshield won't move because the computer controlling it doesn't "know" where it is. I saw someone report a similar instance a couple of years back. Might need to get it down to the dealer to have them take a look.
 
As I recall when plugging in the GS-911, there is a menu item for windscreen calibration or a similar item so you may need to go through a procedure to re-calibrate. Not sure of when this needs to be done but supposed to be getting my Service Manual next week and it may shed some light on what this is.

Although I haven't seen this in a while but at our auto shop you used to have to relearn or re-calibrate the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor on some cars when you disconnected the battery. This forced this device to re-calibrate as the "memory" of its program curve would be lost with a loss of power.

Could be the same with the windscreen...I saw a post about this on a BMW K1600 forum.

I just don't get it. Why does BMW build "solutions" to non-existent problems? The windshield on my 1999 K1200LT also moves. You push the button, it moves in whichever direction you want until you either take your finger off the button, OR it hits the "stop." No computer needed.

I remember when I took delivery of the C650GT I didn't think the windscreen worked because I would push the button and nothing would happen. The salesman showed me I had to push the button and WAIT. Now I know why... because for some idiotic reason, BMW decided it took a computer to figure out the current position of the windscreen, and then move it once it figured it out. WTF? WHY??? On the LT, the windscreen moves IMMEDIATELY. There isn't any computer required to determine where the screen is... the user wanted it to go up, it goes UP until it hits the stop. That should be the only location information needed. Sheesh!!

Lee - a ride I really enjoy is out of Sisters: Hwy 242 out of Sisters - L on Hwy 126 to Takota Restaurant( near Blue River) for lunch - back on 126 to Sahalie Falls - return to Sisters. This is the run I started last week when my battery died. How about I meet U and we do the ride. I'll forward this to another Scoot owner and see if he's available.
 
My windshield has 'frozen' twice since I got it. The first time about two years ago it only took a short visit to the dealer who corrected the computer fault. The second time was two months ago. Same thing, they reflashed the ECU and I was back in business. I don't know what caused it either time and I've had the battery out one time which didn't bother the ECU at all. I do have the GS911 diagnostic tool but hadn't tried resetting the windshield since the dealer is nearby and took care of it. I don't like all the computer stuff on the scooter. It's the CANBUS which can cause the problem. When I installed a pair of louder horns whenever I used them the computer would throw a 'battery shorted' fault into memory. It didn't hurt anything but occurred because the computer didn't know I had installed horns that weren't monitored by the CANBUS. So it thought the unaccounted current draw was a short.
I agree it was simpler on my two K1100LTs, their windshields were simple electric motor operated through a two way switch. No tie in to the bike's computer. But those bikes didn't have the CANBUS. Other electrical problems on those bikes would be harder to troubleshoot than if they happened on the GT.

As far as I understand it, the GS-911 is primarily a diagnostic tool but I believe it has some ability to talk or send data to the ECU/ECM. I was able to reset the Service Light with mine and that involves more than just reading data.

FYI, there is a guy on eBay, although not specifically speaking of the C6xx series, he offers to reprogram the windscreen and it appears to be using a GS-911.

I've reset the service reminders on my scooter with my diagnostic tool. I haven't really tried to do much else other than to check engine temperature, battery charging and looking for faults. I've got the Bluetooth/WiFi version and think I should have purchased the cable linked one. The only advantage I can see is that I can use my iPhone to link up when on the road.
 
Took the 650 to M-Tech in Bend, Oregon yesterday and they fixed the windshield by using their diagnostic tool. No appointment, no $126 / hour, no minimum $65 to talk to you - all fixed for $20. Not like European Motorcycles in Eugene, Oregon. I'd recommend M-Tech if you're ever up in this neck of the woods. The dog-gone windshield was stuck in a position where it touched the L mirror and the vibration was annoying. All's well now. Thanks to this forum, I was able to direct their attention to what a possible solution was. They weren't aware of the problem and solution because they really haven't had any experience with BMW scoots. Thanks again Forum !
