Check your Timing Chain tensioner!!

Was just reading through the Italian BMW Scooter site, and they have seen a lot of NOISE from the Timing Chain when COLD...Tensioner NOT working until the oil warms-up! Two have already had their tensioners REPLACED under warrantee by the dealer...defective at less than 3,000 miles...

Could be what led to that timing chain FAILURE in that thread elsewhere on this forum! Bent valves, holed piston, OUCH!

I'd pay close attention to this!!!

I always let a cold engine idle for as long as it takes for me to put on my goggles, helmet, jacket and gloves and then enough time to back the bike out of the garage and always take it easy for the first couple of blocks. That seems to make sense to me. I've seen folks jump on a cold bike and rev it up and take off. That never made sense to me. What is everyone's practice regarding a cold engine?
 
Any engine should be ridden easy until its oil is warm. The problem is its harder to do on a scooter as you have no gears, but yes, I do take it easy in the first 5 minutes or so to get everything warm.

The same should be true with a car too.

The Italian forum that was linked here doesn't really give any useful information or pictures.
I would certainly go check my cam chain tensioner if I knew how to get to it..
Does anyone know where its located and how to check it?

Mineral oil warms slower than synthetic because the molecules are all different sizes. Synthetic molecules are of an even size and warm evenly getting you to warm oil faster. Oil needs to be at 100F before you start with 50% power, let it get to 200F prior to opening it up. Normal for oil to run at 240 to 280F going down the road. At 240F you will be right into the ok to run but never exceed with mineral oil. Synthetic normally will go to 300F prior to reaching that never exceed temp. Mineral oil at 280F will not protect the engine.
We have a oil water heat exchanger which heats the oil when cold and cools the oil when warm. Giving a good faster warm up.
 
Oh yeah. Thanks for the reminder. I got lost somewhere after the oil discussion started. Is it true that Pfizer has a part they offer for chain tensioning?:rolleyes:
