Hi Everyone

I just got an estimate for my 30k service.

I have not had the drive belt replaced since new. The total for the service was 2100$ Canadian of which 1098$ was for the belt replacement, how easy/ difficult is it to replace the belt and would i need special tools.

Many thanks.

Dave the job takes about 1.5 or 2 hours if you are in the Toronto area I can help you out. I have done my belt 3 times now. One special tool. They are charging you 500 plus for the belt alone. You can get one for about 150 other sources. Have you had the chain adjusted?

That's a crazy price for a belt, you're right about the getting one for 150. Im in wasaga beach, not too far from Richmond hill. I haven't had the chain adjusted yet, that was part of the other 1000$. Ive done oil change and brakes.

I also have a 2019 400gt.

I have to give my "two cents worth" here about those belts. I have a 2013 Gt and have gone thru three belts. The factory BMW belts are of a higher quality than the cheaper ones. You always get what you pay for. Went thru two cheaper ones before the factory spec. allows me the confidence to travel more.

Three belts? How many miles (or kilometers)?

And were they the Mitsuboshi brand or another and, if so, what was the other brand? Highly unlikely that BMW make their own belts, so it has to be some other manufacturer that may also sell under their own name.

I'm running a Mitsuboshi from Carpimoto on my 2013 C650GT. runs just fine. I think it's made in the same factory as the OEM one, certainly the one I bought had exactly the same markings, in the same fonts, etc as the OEM one I took off - it just lacked the BMW badge.

@650Gtbrat Aside from you buying a lemon belt (cheaply) all looks good.
You're supposed to change them every second service (20000km).
Malossi X K belt is a good one, at median price and may last longer.

First belt last to 39,673 kms. Second belt lasted 254 kms before it torn apart. The replacement wasn't much better roughly 400 kms. This factory one now has more than 10,000 kms to date. Odometer reads 59,680
Intended to replace the original belt at 20,000 Km as per the service schedule. At 21,000 I stripped it down and inspected the original belt - it was in perfect condition. Absolutely as new. But I had already bought myself a Mitsoboshi so I installed it. I think I will let it go until the bike gets to 50,000 - I really don't enjoy removing those plastic fairings! (and by the time I got all the plastic back on, I have 4 screws left over...)

This reads like a bad idea, to let it rip inside the case leaving sticky burnt rubber all over the place, and the input shaft spinning madly without load for some time before you kill the engine, wearing / burning the bearings out… been there done that, not nice.
Typically happens when you load it well, say, on a highway overtake, which may end up badly if you’re not ready.
Besides, you need the rollers replaced sooner, for the rattling noise.
