3 Easy Steps to Learning How to Really Appreciate Your Beemer UMV

(assuming you already own a C600 or C650GT BMW UMV)

Step 1. Buy/borrow a dual purpose bike

Step 2. Ride the dual purpose bike in urban and rural environments

Step 3. Ride your Beemer UMV.

(Do not be ashamed of that huge smile on your face after step 3.)

If I had a GS, an RT and a C , I'll guess the C would get the most use and the biggest grin on my face. Honestly about the only other bike I would want is a GTS for zooming around city center, but really the Beemer does it all just fine.

I occasionally crave bikes other than my 650GT (and own a dual purpose) and I am not really sure why. It could be that I feel a lot like a "guest" on this particular Beemer; I get on it and go without a lot to do other than enjoy the surroundings. And that is not a bad thing, of course.

Maybe coming from a dirt background causes me to feel that I should be doing more.

Maybe I feel guilty because it is just so doggone easy. My 86 year old mother told me she wishes I would get rid of the green bike (KLR650) because my "red bike looks so much more comfortable and luxurious" (her words). Yeah, well, it is.

Whatever the reason, I agree, Christian, whatever other bikes I might also own, I think I would end up spending a lot more time on my Beemer Maxiscooter.

An Iron Butt on my C650Gt??? Hmmmm....

I've been kind of wanting to add a new bike to my stable. Maybe a custom cafe racer type bike. However, the reality is that I just love the twist and go ease of use of my C600. I don't think I'd ride a different bike. My poor GTS300 gets no love now. I love looking at it, but the reality is that I don't really ride it anymore because it is so easy to just get on my c600. My only complaint is the throttle lag off the line, but even that is just nit picking.

i hear yah. But I have to admit I have throttle lag when I ride my manual shift bike.....clearly from my lack of talent.

So yesterday I pull up behind a squid on a 'Busa on my way home from work. We both filtered on the right to get to front of a line of cars at a stoplight. I'm thinking the guy is going to take off quickly so we can stay in front of the cars. Light turns green and this guy is like slipping the hell out of the clutch going absolutely no where. Engine is just whining and he is going maybe 3 mph. I'm thinking his engine is about to explode. Finally, he gets it engaged and he starts going, but I'm like WTF? By this point, the cars have already started over taking but fortunately they decided to let us back in the lane before we ran into the parked cars about 50 yards up.

I actually get a bigger kick out of riding my '94 K1100LT for sheer riding pleasure not done in town. For running errands and riding in town it's the 650GT hands down. The GT is easier to load up when going to the store and can carry larger stuff than the LT even with its trunk and saddlebags. Just today I took the GT to Costco. I got a 36 can case of Diet Pepsi, some groceries and fruit and managed to get it all inside the scooter except for the case of Pepsi that I tied on the back seat. It wouldn't have fit on the back seat of the K bike. I get a kick out of the motorcycle parking area at Costco. Of all the stores that I'd think would have bike parking Costco would be the last one I'd think of. Most people buy a heck of a lot more stuff there than you could get in three bikes.

I've spent more riding time recently on my Stella 125, Vespa clone to break it in for Amerivespa. It's a fun little bike. However, when I climbed aboard my C600 it was like switching from a Yugo to a Quattroporte. No comparison except for two wheels.

So silly question about sliders vs rollers. Does it eliminate the lag and/or increase acceleration times by engaging the clutch at a higher RPM? In other words, if my clutch starts to engage at 2000 RPM when stock, does it start to engage at 2500 RPM with the sliders?

Response with the sliders depends on the weight. The lighter ones let the engine remain in a lower 'gear' ration longer while the heavier ones shift the ratios higher sooner. So you'd want lighter ones for quick acceleration and heavier ones for more fuel economy. I put 26gm. Dr. Pulley sliders in my '07 Silverwing. I chose that weight because it was closest to the OEM performance with the Honda rollers. I wanted to keep the overall performance close to the original. They really don't change the rpm point of clutch engagement because that's not the variator's job. The centrifugal clutch performance can be changed with different springs though I don't know if aftermarket ones are available for the BMW scooter as they are for the Honda Silverwing. Stiffer springs allow the rpms to be higher when the clutch engages which gives a faster launch.
