Best place to mount heated gear socket on GT?

Finally got heated gear and wish I did sooner. For now the power wire is routed through the opening at bottom of the handlebars "plastic cowl." It works but.... I bought a panel mount and I'm still thinking of where to drill and install.

Any ideas on the best place to locate the panel mount?

I have my connections on the handle bars, but, if I was going to leave the handle bars simple I would put the panel mount sockets in the key switch panel lower section.

I drilled a small hole in the back of the right-side glove box and ran the wire directly to the battery. I mounted the controller next to the ignition with velcro tape so I can remove it when not needed.

Does the power wire then just get "closed on" by the glove box door as there's a pretty big gap to accommodate?

I thought you were installing the panel mount controller. Just remember to have the wire hanging down where it goes into the glovebox, or when it rains the water will follow the wire into the box if you don't.

Definitely interested in this, since heated gear is now on my watch list (see my traveling/touring thread).

Hey, maybe I should head north and David can show us how/where it's done. I'll buy the beer if someone else does the work. I'd just break things.

The main advantage to having a panel mount is the ability to "plug in" while moving. It is very difficult to plug a wire into a wire while moving,if you are forgetful.

This is my handle bar mount, the heat controller is lower left, and mounts on a marine hand held radio mount I had. I have a main power feed to the handle bars which will power any electrical gear I need. Also note the radio and GPS mount. On the right is a lighted main power switch box containing fuses and a battery charger connection.Just below the green switch is a voltmeter (the numbers light up when on).On the top are two USB connectors.Upper left is the antenna mount.

This is the set up I have on my GT. The socket under the handlebar is directly wired to the battery with a 15A inline fuse. I cut a slot in the plastic handlebar cover to clip my Gerbings dual controller to the handlebar. Very handy. The lead from the controller goes to my Gerbings heated jacket liner which has sockets for my Gerbings G3 heated gloves. Really makes winter riding more pleasant. The socket is a coaxial DC socket that mates to the Gerbings gear. It has a plastic plug to keep out water when not in use.
I made a cup holder slips into that slot for summer riding. It clips to a frame tube in the under seat storage when not in use.

This is very clean. I like the location of the socket and the controller. I'm gonna try the same setup. Thank you exdavid.

I've got an interim solution. There is a lot of room below the top silver BMW handle bar cover and I think I'll mount my socket there. But I realized I could route the main heater wire the same as the BMW nav wire. I'm gonna look at it a couple weeks then decide on the drill.

Coming out the side of the handle bar nacelle is probably a little more weather resistant, self draining.
