Guy road up to the coffee shop on the corner by my house, and haltingly made his way in. Older guy, not moving well, wore a euro-style ADV jacket and Nolan Modular. H.m.m.m.m, older guy (70+?) riding something Euro? When I left, this is what I saw. I only thought Harleys had that much polished stuff and chrome! What a SWEET older bike!

REALLY? You guys liked that thing? I thought it was the biggest mistake BMW ever made. It came out shortly after the original Oilhead models (the R1100RS and R1100RT), but unlike those 95hp bikes, this 1200cc Oilhead only made a measly 61hp. That is one more horsepower than the antique, air-cooled, pushrod boxers before them, and they were only 1000cc.

The bike was actually introduced to the public on April 1, 1997 and a LOT of traditional BMW Riders swore it was an April Fool's Joke! The biggest joke was the R1200CL model. Same engine, but they added about 200 lbs of fiberglass in the form of a fairing, lowers, saddlebags and trunk. Rather than give it any more power, they added a sixth gear. You had to shift that thing like a madman to keep it at a steady speed on the highway. They eventually dropped both models from their line up and todays 1200cc boxer motors put out almost TWICE the horsepower that thing did.

I see one regularly in my community. Strikes me as as an obvious cruiser when I see it. It also looks a little zany and artsy. Kinda almost cool, but something is not quite right. Sorry, but it reminds me of a Subaru XT.

Yeah, BMW replaced Aston Martin as the "go to" car company in the Bond movies around that time, too. Pissed off a lot of British fans, too.

The Z3 convertible was also introduced in a Bond movie.

I chatted to a guy last summer at a Starbucks who had a R1200C from new and he has only ever changed the oil and claims to have never washed it! He did tell me how long he had it for but I've forgotten. From my viewpoint it looked like it was made of clay because of the caked on dirt. I should have taken a photo.
