exhaust heat-shield sheered-off

Hi there,

This weekend I went for a long ride on my 650S scoot, bought brand-new in April this year.

My entire trip was on tarmac and the engine, indeed the entire scooter went well, putting a smile on my face.

Today I washed the scoot and discovered some parts were missing?!?

The heat-shield covering parts of the exhaust has broken off
One of the two bolts affixing the pillion foot peg on the same – right – side has gone missing, and the second bolt is loose
A screw just above this assembly is missing??

Please see attached pics:

Now I was not smiling any longer, indeed I am annoyed and disappointed that something like this did happen!

Just to clarify: I did not drop the scooter …. and never has anyone been my pillion, therefore the peg was never used.

My dealer's service department recently completed the 10 000km service. I would like to believe that an overall check for connections and roadworthiness would have included ensuring that all and these specific parts are properly tightened.

Fortunately nobody came to harm, but I do wonder how this can happen at all, especially the braking off of the heat-shield?
Has anything like this happened to others??

OMG ... WTF! Most i've had "fall off" was one of the windscreen rubber stops ... dealer ordered a free replacement. If you stick with your: "it simply fell off" story ... Warranty should have you covered. If you suggest it was possibly stolen (or vandalized) while you weren't looking ... then you'll have to deal with your insurance.

Hungry dingos or goannas? :D Sorry...I couldn’t resist... Sounds like something maybe wasn’t tightened enough and maybe a vibrating resonance loosened it????

Noice, gentlemen, noice .... you know Lindy was ultimately found not guilty and indeed it was a Dingo ...

Got a call from the dealer today and shall ride bye tomorrow. Sure we can work something out.
My take is "undecided" - regarding the cause.
Can't have been stolen, as scoot was parked at Horizons Unlimited meeting campground beside my tent. And only honest people attend these meets.
I did not fall off, no scuff marks on the footpegs do prove
I almost guess that these bolts were never ever done up properly. Not sure how a scoot arrives from the ship at the dealer to be fullt assembled. Maybe the tecci was interrupted in the middle of the task and overlooked these three ...?
Shall let you know about the outcome

Up-date: Went to see the dealer. The fixed it temporarily, as they will have to get one bolt from Germany. Seems to have unusual length/thread?? Happy to wait and get it fixed properly.

I second Lee's comment, for sure.

FWIW...My guess is that your original thoughts are correct; the set-up tech missed something for whatever reason.
