I filled up my 2016 C650 Sport for the first time yesterday. I'm also in California. What I did was hold the nozzle so it was straight into the hole. The end of the handle was touching the handle bars and you may need to readjust but once I got it aligned it was perfect. It was a chevron station. I hate having to hold the rubber thing because I don't want to get fuel all over my scoot.

Make sure the nozzle is all the way in. Are these the 2nd Gen acooters? On my 2013, I have to play around and the nozzle drops in farther. Sometimes takes me up to 30 seconds to get it right.

My BV 350 I use the aerostich filling tool.

Make sure the nozzle touches the filler opening. If there is no contact you can get a static discharge and an explosion!!

There is a hole for the nozzle about 2 or three inches below the opening of the fuel neck. If the gas nozzle doesn't go into the fuel tank neck several inches you missed the hole. It's easily visible if you look. Also you'll get more fuel in the bike if you fuel it on the center stand.
