Heated Grips Help Prevent Hand Cramping

Yesterday I was on an extended ride with one of my clubs. It was nippy by Houston standards (nothing compared to Chicago weather). I heated my grips for the first time and found that the heat prevented the cramping I usually get in my left hand. That makes perfect sense since heat can reduce muscle spasms. I was a bit annoyed that the dealer had added this option originally but am now very happy.

Back in 1985 when I bought my first BMW (a K100), the dealer offered me the option of heated grips. I thought that was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard, so I passed. That first winter, I changed my mind and had him install them. Never realized how WONDERFUL they could be. Heated gloves MAY keep your hands warmer, but they're only good if you're actually wearing them. Can't tell you how many times I was out later than I'd planned and the temperature drop was more dramatic than I'd thought. Having the heated grips always on hand was a Godsend. Every bike/scooter I've owned since then has had heated grips if they were an option.

The jury is still out on the heated seat (I've had one on my K1200LT since 1999), but I'm sold on the heated grips for sure.

Jaime C - I agree on the heated seat. I turned the seat heater off after awhile because I found it a little uncomfortable.

I LOVE my heated grips. I don't know how anyone rides here without them. The heated seat is nice too. Mine gets quite warm. I usually have to turn it off periodically.

For both the grips and seat, I find the low setting doesn't get warm enough and the 100% setting gets a little hot after awhile.

This is why there is the auto setting. I had heated grips on my k75 and loved them. I thought why a heated seat? Now I love having it I just put it on high when I first get on the scooter after a few minutes I then put it on auto and then it takes care of my butt. With it I don't always need my heated suit turned on.

Another great benefit to having a heated seat is the girls love it and will get on the back seat without thinking twice.

The auto setting doesn't work well for me. I think you have to have sustained high speeds for it to work properly and since vast majority of my riding is in the city with stop and go traffic, it never keeps the grips warm enough. I rarely exceed 60mph for any length of time as I don't do a lot of highway riding.

I didn't understand the Auto setting until the temp here dropped below 50 or so degrees then I realized that it worked so well that I did not realize that it was on, the chill was gone and no uncomfortable "hot" feeling. I find the seat on high to be really very warm. Now I just leave it on Auto and let it manage the temps for me in all but the coldest temps.

At 60F my grips come on at 50F my seat comes on both at 100% then go to auto. Do wish BMW would make a set of hand guards or a kit to install something like the 800GS bike has which would help with the cold, rain and bugs.

in northern Ohio heated grips have been a must have for awhile now for the reason Jaime mentioned....Often out later than expected with temps dropping more than anticipated and a lot of higher speeds; big time wind chill. I keep extra gloves in the trunk but having the heat on the hands when I want it without having to stop is great.

The seat heats up for me a little much at high, as others have said. Low setting is just fine.
