How important is the oil pickup pipe?

Just in the middle of doing an oil change on my 2013 C650GT with around 17000 miles on it. I notice that the front strainer, which should have been changed for an oil pickup pipe at the first service, is still in place (i.e. that bit of the first service was obviously never done). How important is this - should I replace it now?

What do you mean by "front strainer"

The only oil strainer is in the bottom of the oil tank and it is cleaned, not removed. See attached.

There is another oil strainer which is supposed to be removed by the dealer at the first service and replaced by an oil pickup pipe. It's about 30 cm further forward from the one you mention, and you have to remove quite a bit of plastic to get to it.

Hi mate, did you manage to get to the bottom of this? Mine still has two strainer tubes fitted. Thank you.

Thank you very much, think I'm in the same position as you. Need to check next oil service. Seems a bizarre set up but well done on finding out the tube should have been fitted. May I ask how you found out? Thank you in advance, Shaun

I was reading through the BMW workshop manual and happened across the initial service instructions. I think the idea is that any bits of swarf in a new engine will be collected by the filter before getting into the oil pump. Once the engine has had its first oil and filter change, it’s assumed to be clear of rubbish.

Thank you for that mate 🙂 I'm really unsure what to do now as I'm sure mine still has the strainer.

My 2013 with 93000km still has the original strainer (never replaced) my bike runs fine. I have known about this day 1 but laziness kicked in
