I Don't Care What You Say, Scooters Are Cool

Finally someone at a publication had the guts to say it. I think a lot of motorcycle guys would be better off on scooters, but they are too worried about what others might say. When I was deciding to buy a bike, at first I really wanted a motorcycle, but after being honest with myself, I figured out all I really needed was a scooter. Almost all of my riding is commuting in stop n go city traffic, so ease of use was paramount. Shifting would suck.

I keep waiting to hear of some other motorcycles offering DCT or some other variant. I've been thinking of putting a deposit on a MV Agusta Tourismo Veloce. It appears to be a semi-auto that has clutchless shifting both up and down at any speed.

Aprilia (division of Piaggio) has had the 850 Mana sport-standard with CVT available for a number of years now in this country. That same engine is used in a mega-scooter in Europe, but the V-Twin engine takes up space under the saddle that would normally go to storage capacity. It actually works better as a motorcycle engine. The faux tank in the Mana can swallow up a full face helmet and other stuff (the real tank is under the saddle).

I believe that if any of us wanted a motorcycle instead of a scooter we would have bought one instead of the BMW. I personally think that a PTW vehicle that operates with the ease and convenience of a scooter that has the performance of a mid-sized sport bike is pretty damn cool. Whether I am cool or not is another topic altogether. Whether I give a rat's ass about whether I am cool or not is an even shorter topic. I'm glad the guy in the magazine finally gets it. I'm not sure the guys who think "Full Throttle Saloon" is reality television will ever get it. But then - there's that rat's ass thing again.

Times they are a changin'....Twist and go, storage, great balance, superb handling, and super comfortable seating with great ergonomics. Come to think of it, my old thumper was in my garage because it (and me) could get beat up and keep on going. It sure wasn't showy or show-off bike. I loved that bike and the fun I had with it. But I would not want it now; not 100% true....I really would like it....just wouldn't want to spend a lot of time on it. My current bike or scooter or whatever it is does the job for me. Over the 4 months and 4k miles I have had owned it, I have never had anyone say anything other than express some surprise that "now" BMW is making motorcycles. "Yeah," I said. "They just thought they might try to make a go of it."
