Long Distance on C600

So I had the chance to finally do a really long ride on my C600. I rode from Chicago to Nashville the other week for a charity ride. All the other riders were on cruisers of varying models. I had a great time, the riders were accepting, and we raised a bunch of money for a children's hospital.

Nevertheless, I figured I share some thoughts.

It was kind of funny showing up to the staging area. I could see the WTF look on the cruiser rider's faces. The C600 seems so small next to fully dressed Street Glides and Trikes. After we got out on the rode, most were genuinely surprised at how well the scoot handled and as one put it, "that thing has some guts"

I was actually quite surprised at how well the C600 handled the long ride. We did hit the super slab a large chunk of the way, but tried to stick to more scenic routes when possible. Being able to move my legs around was a huge benefit and definitely helped ward off fatigue.

I averaged about 55mpg which is much better than the 43 or so I get riding around Chicago.

My only complaints is that my butt started hurting pretty bad after awhile and the lack of cruise control caused my right elbow and wrist to essentially seize up. I did use a throttle buster but I didn't find it all that great. I'm going to need to find a better alternative. I'm hoping to take another ride of similar distance this fall.

The one thing I did realize is that the BMW is really a great bike. I have been contemplating getting a MV Agusta Turismo Veloce or a Ducati Multistrada, but I'm really having a hard time justifying it now.

Thanks for an great ride report. Let me say 3 words.... C 650 GT

Those two are great bikes. But, as you know, really different from your C. Unlike you, I have not had the will power to keep from buying whatever bike candy catches my eye. ;) If I ever get down to one "last" bike, the BMW C GT would fit the bill for me.

I rode to West Virginia from Boston in June. No problems on the Sport. I don't care what you sit on, if you sit for 8 hours your butt is going to hurt.

You do have to stop for gas more than once in those eight hours... or do you ride really really slowly and cover only about 150 miles in eight hours? :p

It was about 100 degrees and high humidity. We did 500 miles the first day. Stopped every 100 miles. It was so hot, we didn't even need bathroom breaks as we sweated out every ounce of fluid. There were times I didn't want to stop as I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get back on the bike.

I was kind of envious of one guy on a Indian Chieftan. He had the radio blasting. Cruise control. Highway pegs. The fairing pretty much blocked all the wind buffeting. Kind of like he was riding a couch.

Get a KAOKO Throttle Lock!

I'll second that. That was one of the first additions I made to my GT. Works well. Not so good in group riding because slight shifts in the CVT make the bike's speed to vary much more than my previous motorcycles with geared transmissions using throttle locks. I still hope to get my Rostra electronic CC on my GT May when the Warranty is up. One thing I'm noticing is my GT's seat is either breaking in or I am. Much more comfortable on longer rides now.

Awesome!

I know the lure of sexier bikes will always exist. I've said it before, for day in day out plus pleasure riding, I can't beat this thing. That said, a new MV or Duc would be nice; or maybe the new V7. Or an R nineT or Mana Gt...

Glad you are enjoying your C600.

Who needs highway pegs when you have all of the possible foot positions available on your scooter?? Radio? That's why I have a bluetooth set in my helmet and over 6Gb of MP3 files loaded into my Garmin. Plenty of weather protection from the GT's fairing so the only thing missing is a REAL cruise control (I have a Throttlemeister on my GT, but rarely use it. It's not like the return spring on the throttle is all that heavy).

I've done a few all day rides on the GT and after a few hours I see all the other guys twitching and bending around cause of fatigue and then there's me just cruising along :D
It has great ergonomics and better fuel range than most, excellent bike for the long haul provided you wear ear plugs.

The ability to move my feet around with the floorboards really made the ride bearable. Very convenient when needing to shift positions to keep the blood flowing. The lack of different foot positions on sport tourers I've been considering is the one thing that concerns me.

I really can't logically say another bike would do more than my C600 other than maybe look slightly more sexy and have more down low power. The reality though is that the c600 has plenty of power and very rarely I'm I really looking for more than is available.

I'm thinking if I get the BMW Nav V, the scoot will really have everything I need.

By the way, I wouldn't be surprised if one or two of the other riders was wishing they were on your bike instead.
