Maybe The Worst BMW Scoot Failure Story

My friend bought a 2013 GT just after I did. I just got an email from him about his experience:

"I do have a funny story about the scooter - last week in september i brought it in for servicing because the temp light kept coming on. They did diagnostics, and replaced a whole bunch of electronic sensor stuff under warranty. Two days after I got it back, had the same problem, except now it wasn’t running smooth - very choppy. Brought it in, they took apart the head of the engine - warped from the heat. Completely covered by warranty they said, except the estimated fix was $9,200! I opted for the “repurchase remedy” under the extended warranty plan - so they had their guy come out, size it up, added up the cost of the tax, accessories, extended warranty, then depreciated by $1700, and said they’d cut a check for $10,400 if i agreed. Of course I did, so hopefully in the next week or two i’ll have their check and go out and buy a car for the winter months. Maybe go back in in the spring and get another scooter (with the extended warranty!) because it was a lot of fun to ride."

Amazing.

Uh, looks like nothing was wrong with the temp sensor's reading. Anyone have a HEAT GUN to read the actual engine temp at the head??? These are Factory Trained? Plug-in diagnostics are great and all, but not at the cost of not starting with COMMON SENSE. "H-m-m-m. Says it's HOT. Let's see if it's actually HOT?" Wow.

What, misdiagnose and kill the engine?...

I know one dealer that I'd never go to. This is another one that I really doubt is much more than a money generation program on the front end. Not to knock the mechanics. Its all at the service writer level which is driven by management goals. Having said that. It may have been an expensive mistake too.
