What do you take apart to get the cross piece through the tail light/plate bracket.

Did you get rain covers with the bags? Oh wait, it never rains in California ( there is a song about that).

Two up common sense.

To get the bottom crossbar off, I just unscrew the threaded croosbar. If I put one side in all the way then it fits between. As I then loosen it it tightens into the other. It's a little dance but only takes a second and is secure.

As for rain covers, reviews said they are no good. They either blow off or collect water. Just pack things in waterproof bags.
