Recall in the U.S. "Official"?

I *THINK* (and don't hold me to this) that as long as you don't hear the "barking seal" when the engine is running, you're okay. I'll let the others chime in here...

a quote from a recent article on Jeep.

"Allan J. Kam, an auto safety consultant who spent 25 years as an enforcement attorney at NHTSA, said the time it is taking to repair the Jeeps is "beyond disgraceful." Usually, manufacturers will start making repairs within 60 days of notifying NHTSA of a recall, he said. Legally, however, car makers are only required to do so within a reasonable time."

So much for Japanese reliability lol

"The air bags were supplied by Japan's Takata, which has seen more than 12 million vehicles recalled over the past five years for related air bag issues. Also affected by the regional recall were Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co, Mazda Motor Corp, Fuji Heavy Industries-owned Subaru, Mitsubishi, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Chrysler brand.

But that's the way of the motor industry these days, parts come from all over the place.

FWIW....My "seal" comes and goes. Yesterday I was on a 7 hour ride, mostly highway, and it disappeared. That has happened before. I do not know enough about the mechanics of the machine or tensioner or any other moving part, but it almost seems as if it warms up and "heals itself"*....at least for that days ride.

*My version of the tensioner doing its job.

Here's a picture looking over Lake Erie from Marblehead to Cedar Point far in the background. Great day for riding. Spectacular skies. My lack of photography skills do not do it justice.

Ah, Cedar Point... one of my FAVORITE places on earth! Please give my regards to Millennium Force. One day we WILL be back.

My recall letter arrived from BMW this morning.

" ... at the present time, we do not yet have the parts to conduct this recall. You will be advised by mail, as soon as parts become available."

The letter also describes the noise and other abnormal operating conditions that would likely be the tensioner.

I got the same letter today and they said that they would notify me by 1st class mail not 2nd class but 1st class mail when they get the part in that good enough for me.

Has anybody recorded the sound of a bad timing chain? Seals barking is an interesting notion and I added a video of a seal clapping and making other noises to help - but I would imagine that a loose timing chain would make a more clacking sound as it slaps whatever surface with which it comes into contact. I base this idea on loose bicycle chain noises.

Got my recall notice today.

Quote from the article I'd linked:

Date: May 16, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V264000
Component/System: Engine

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 C 600 Sport, and C 650 GT motorcycles manufactured August 2, 2012, through February 18, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the camshaft chain tensioner may not function properly, resulting in an engine stall.

Consequence: An engine stall may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners and dealers will replace the camshaft chain tensioner, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2014. Owners may contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

No "surmise" about it. That is the official notification from the NHTSA.

BMW, in its recall letter, calls it "a metallic slapping noise from the engine". So unless there are two seals fighting, then the seal bark is probably some other anomaly.

I think the whirr you hear is the cv unit (transmission) this is a normal sound PS I see your avatar is a MP 3 I also own a MP3 500'and they don't have that whirring sound from the cv unit,Wel I should say mine does not do that.
