You might want to wait to sell until the recall is announced and the repairs are done. Or consider a trade in. Just a thought. Good Luck with your sale. I like the 9t as well.

Thanks for the heads-up Tapatalk.
Is that the side stand switch recall or something else that I may not have heard about?
I had the switch rectified.
The Dealer has offered me $6,500 as a trade in on a R1200RT (9T are months away again) so maybe I should take that?
The best cash offer so far is co-incidentally $6,500 as well.
I may accept one or the other, but was hoping higher.
Regards,
Mike.

Here is a screenshot of an article that's been going around regarding Timing Chain Tensioner recall in Germany and Canada. I'd expect US to get on board soon enough. My bike has been at dealer since April 15 on account of intermittent timing tensioner noise, bmw techs have decided to replace clutch assy and clutch side oil seals which are in back order till Aug. 8th. I hope the recall hits soon as I really don't want to lose an entire summer riding season. I'd think that anyone serious about a Sport or GT would know about these issues that have been reported from nearly all countries our bikes are being sold. I hope this helps arm you with some info just incase you get asked by a prospective punter.

BTW: if it's a brand new RT your interest in, rear suspension is currently on a "do not ride" advisement for owners until a remedy is available.

Personally I wanted a used RT but once I got my hands on the Sport I lost all interest in a geared bike. I'm curious as to what the 1200 does better than the GT you currently have. Because your right, losing 4k bucks on your current machine is not all that groovy just to switch bikes.

Hi Xian,
Thanks once again for the heads-up on the R1200RT
The trade in quote was for a second hand RT, only a few years old with minimum mileage.
What year did the troubles with the rear suspension start?

Why the sale of the bike you ask?

Mostly because with the wife on the back and the CG going up. I find it difficult for low speed maneavouring
By myself, I can handle it very well. Turn on a dime at low speeds etc and no hassles making it do what I want it to do.
Get my wife on the back with the high seat and now my confidence goes for a s**t
Travelling slowly in heavy traffic 2-up is now a series of go and stop, no slow speed crawling.
I first thought my wife was moving around on the back, but she says she knows the rules and that is not the reason.
She is now reluctant to go on the back, and I am in agreement with her.

I agree with you, the lack of gearing is great, but now having second thoughts about the advantages.

We are probably going to hire a RT next weekend. There is a rental place nearby.
I am hoping that the lower seating (I trust) is going to be an improvement two up.
Time and trial will tell.

The T-9 with the lower seat height felt good in the shop. The pinion seating is somewhat lacking with the current import model though.

When we were young, my R69S with its low CG was great for pinion.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Maybe its just age and some weight gain which makes it now difficult 2-up on the scooter.

Regards,
Mike.

As I understand it would only be brand spanking new RT's that have a rearend issue. Any used bike should be well sorted and ok to buy.

Interesting to know about your observations regarding c.g. and pillion riding. I've not exactly experienced what you describe, but then again I figure some handling differences will occur when I place 170 or so lbs of my missus on the back. It'll certainly be something I'll think about when I get back on mine.

A 9t I'd think would be horrible for 2up riding compared to an RT or a K bike. She's good looking with loads of curb appeal but I personally consider it a one person machine, just like a Thruxton is really a one person bike.

Here is a screenshot of a Facebook post that BMW released a few days ago regarding the RT.

Price reduced to $7,500

Be patient, if you can, Mike. Your $8,500 price was a good deal (lower than most on cycletrader - of course, a bike is only worth what someone wii pay for it). Just takes a little time for buyers to find you.

Its a weird sensation when it goes unstable.
Maybe the relatively smaller diameter of the wheels somehow?
Have not experienced it on other bikes.
My wife is around the weight you mention, maybe slightly less, and I am around 205.

Would like to hear if anyone else has experienced same?

I'm 200 lbs. My wife would KILL me if I told people how much she weighed (but let's just say she's in the same neighborhood). I don't really notice any difference (other than in acceleration of course) when she's on the back of my C650GT. Do you inflate your tires to the recommended pressures for two-up before you take her?

Same thing I as thinking. I noticed a big difference when I had low pressure and a load on the back; a 110lb box I was carrying to the office.

(Shut up, guys....I know what you are thinking)

No, I must admit to neglecting tyre pressures.
I do not make any changes before the missus gets on the back.

Jaime: Thanks for the idea/suggestion of possible cause.

SteveADV: what difference did you notice?

Thanks,
Mike.

I run 36 f and 40 r on my bike all my driving is hwy here in Vt there is only 1 stop light between Brattleboro and Bennington ( 42 miles between them) and that is in the town I live in If I travel North from where I live I have to go and look for a traffic light and that would be in Ludlow which is 46 miles away so no need for me to run at the lower pressures.

Traded in the bike on a future R Nine T
Now just got to wait for them to be available again.
Trading it in at the Dealer did gave me piece of mind regarding the possible recall due to chain tensioner.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I believe the tire pressure was a big part of the problem.

Regards,
Mike.

Let us know how you like the 9t when you get it. It is a fine looking bike for sure.

what does your TPS say the tire pressures are?

Just a reminder, the tire pressure readout on all BMW motorcycles show what the tire pressure would be at an ambient temperature of 68F. I have no idea why they do it like that but I'm sure the engineers have a good explanation. It probably wouldn't make any sense to the motorcycle riding public but they're happy with it.
