I'm preparing to remove the front wheel of my GT to take it to the dealer to mount a new tire for me. I was a bit stymied for a few minutes when I discovered the interior hex on the right side of the axle. It turned out easy to rig up a tool for it.
A short 19mm or 3/4" bolt will fit nicely into the axle end. I used a short bolt with two nuts on one end. Just run the nuts together, tight against the top of the thread on the bolt. I used some Loctite red locking compound to lock the nuts to the bolt. I would have brazed them but my torch is out of Oxygen right now. Anyway it works just fine, stick the double nutted end into the axle, which makes a more stable situation than using the bolt head and turn the axle with a 3/4" or 19MM wrench.
