Route 66

I want to do Route 66 but don't want to be on the road for about a month or so. It's about an 8 hour ride from here in Toronto to the start in Chicago. My thinking is to perhaps do about 1/2 this year and the other 1/2 next year. Don't feel the need to see everything on the journey and be somewhat selective about it. So thinking maybe 8 or 9 days do do the first half from Chicago end and about 5 days to get home. Another thought is to ship the bike to LA and do the full journey to Chicago from Santa Monica.
Anyone got any thoughts on any possible scenario whether you have done any of it or not? I have read lots of materials on this but nobody seems to have any thoughts on any kind of abreviated trip.

Sounds like a good trip. But, if you do 1/2 this year and the other half next year, aren't you doing the trip 1 1/2 times? You have to do the first half again to get to the second half.
I think shipping the bike to SM might be the way to go and you can do it in one year.

Yes it is 1 1/2 times but not so worried about that. Spoke to a rider at the local Motorrad delership today who has done it a few times and ships his bike to Vegas. There are at least a couple of local companies that ship bikes for trips and Vegas is the most popular. Am thinking Vegas might be a good choice and that way I can make a trip to Death Valley before the big one. Other advice I got today was simply don't plan to try the entire R66 as some parts are not even possible on an adventure bike. I kinda knew that already so am close to a planned that is about 75-80% original. Getting excited now!
