Serendipity and my new GT

Sometimes the bike finds you ....

I've been riding a Burgman 400 since last summer when I bought a pretty white one in Buffalo, New York and rode it home to South Florida. Great bike, tons of fun with a big, solid ride and 73 mpg in the mountains of Pennsylvania!

For the last few months, I've been pining for the fjords -- no wait, that's the dead parrot in the Monty Python skit. I've been pining to own another BMW C 650 GT, my sixth. I looked at a lot online but couldn't find my buying specs: late model, low mileage, BMW top case. I knew I'd buy one eventually. I had a $300 Utopia driver's backrest from the last GT waiting on my shelf, the BMW Service Manual on DVD, BMW tools like variator holder, oil filter wrench and torx bits.

Yesterday, without a thought of GT's in my brain, I rode my Burgman to my son's house. He asked me to sit with my granddaughter while he ran. It was a last minute thing because she was home from school with a cough. I'd planned on working out at LA Fitness, so I dressed for it, with my usual German tri-color compression sleeves on my calves. I figured I'd hit a new LA Fitness location near his house. He recommended another that was even closer, so I went there.

After my workout (2.5 miles on a treadmill at 3.8 mph carrying 7.5 lb. hand weights and throwing punches all the way, intense!), I was getting ready to climb on my Burgman when a guy approached. He asked about my bike and my socks. He was a friendly soul, born in Germany, with a David Crosby, walrus-mustache. I told him about the Burgman, said I loved it but really wanted to get another C 650 GT.

"Maybe you would like to buy mine," he said. "I'm thinking about giving up riding. I'm getting up there in years."

Turns out he had a showroom-condition, blue 2019 GT in his garage with 1,190 miles, and a matching BMW top case. He said he had no idea what price to ask for the bike. I told him I'd agreed with the owner of a white 2020 GT in Birmingham, Alabama that I'd buy his bike for $7,500 in the Spring if it was still available. My guy said he was okay with that price. I got it knocked down to $7,250 by saying I was buying a 2019, not a '20, and he was good with that.

With the price settled, I offered to follow him to his house to check out the bike. It was flawless but definitely underused, groaning a little as he started it up for the first time in months. I listened to it purr perfectly and said, "I like it, the price is right, when do you want to sell it?"

He shrugged and said, "I'm flexible, when would you like to do it?" I said, "How about now?" I'd ride home, shower, go to the bank and return. When I got back, we traded bike and title for cash, shook hands and I said, "I'm really glad I all the various circumstances of this day put me in the exact place where you decided to walk up and say hello."

It was completely serendipitous. Also relaxed, natural, enjoyable, like it was meant to be. We both enjoyed the experience immensely. The bike felt amazing on the ride home, powerful and sure with proper BMW gravitas. I loved it, felt like a kid who just got the best toy in the world, and I didn't do a single thing to find it yesterday.

Sometimes the bike finds you.

Sehr Schon... Congrats, let's see how long you will manage to hold onto this one!
Ha, fair point, guilty as charged. My average buy-to-sell in the past few years is six months and 6,000 miles.

Different market today. Harder to find a great deal and more challenging to sell. With the mileage so low on this GT, I plan to keep it long-term and use it sparingly and well. I'm hanging on to the Burgman 400 as the errand-runner and grocery getter. It's just a blast. This assumes I can keep my Catholic guilt at bay that asks why I have two bikes when some people have nothing ;o)

I have the perfect combination of bikes (for me). And for the first time, I don't have a "next" bike in mind. Maybe BMW's electric scooter, but not until they extend the range WAY beyond 60 to 80 miles.

What a beauty of a scoot! Well done.
Is there really a reason to prefer the Burgy? My feeling of C650GT was that it is almost as fast and neat in corners as my Sport, only with a better suspension and wind protection, both adding to comfort and removing the feeling of speed. I HAD TO look at the dash to see if i was going 80kmh or 100kmh

The C 650 GT is fast. But the Burgman 400 feels quicker up to 40 mph. Two different types of rides. I feel lucky to have both.

I love the BMW's gravitas. I ride it smoothly for the most part, with occasional bursts of enjoying the power and performance. It's a stately ride.

The Burgman is a blast. It weighs 101 lbs. less than the GT and you feel it. Very flickable, easy to lean into quick turns, very responsive when you punch it, which I do a lot. And with the same 62-inch wheelbase, it has rock-solid stability at higher speeds.

I even ordered a second Schuberth helmet last night so each bike has its own. Of note: two German websites, www.motoin.de and www.moto-fc.de have Schuberths for around half of what you'll pay in the U.S. I got a new matte black size XL for $247 vs. $599 for the same lid on Revzilla ("optical quality" visor, drop down sun shield, built in microphone and speakers). Shipping was $27.95 via DHL, which delivers my orders from Europe so fast I always wonder how the heck they did that.

Thanks Delray - I think my Sport gives me something in between your two bikes, probably not so good as each of them but a 2-in-1.
That Schuberth C5 on motoin.de site shows me AU$873.11 for XL size Silver color which is probably US$599. They must like you yankees! ;) or are they made in US ?
Also heavy Size 61: 1790 gr. +/-50 gr. -> I can get HJC RPHA 90S Carbon for AU$999 (+$0 shipping, I pick one up) weighing 1550g, whopping 240g lighter.

"His search will never be over, Mike is a hunter and the C650 is his prey ..."

I like the light white 2020. That was my target before the matte blue GT found me. Never say never, as Ceesie says.

Here is a 2018 GT the guy painted BMW red! Very striking with a matching BMW top case and low mileage. If I hadn't just bought a GT, I'd definitely be in touch with this owner.

Yep. Last week for me. I learned about the C650 five years ago when my wife handed me a review in the WSJ. As a previous owner of a 2003 Burgman 650 I was immediately in infatuated. But at the time new ones were around $13K and I was a full-time college student (translation: no funds for such things). Then BMW discontinued the 650 as of the 2020 model year. That left me looking at emails from CycleTrader for the past five years, first just dreaming and then serious when I sold my boat. Last Tuesday it appeared in my Inbox and I was dialoging the guy in Ft. Lauderdale within minutes. It was a silver GT with 347 miles on it. I went to look at and we agreed that $8,000 was the price. The next day I rode it home from the title agency in west Broward.

I remember that WSJ review. It sold me.

Your bike is gorgeous. I love that color.

I see you're in Boca ... likewise. Small world! Welcome to the forum.

Thanks. Are there any groups that cruise 441?

Only local group I found is Gold Coast Beemers, part of BMW MOA (there is a fee to join MOA, not the group), They are active and do regular rides, often overnight, with meetings on the first Saturday of each month at the The Nest Eatery on Glades west of 441. I haven't attended yet. Guy who was a member said it's mostly big BMW's, K-series and R-series. He had the only C 650 GT.

Del, I just went to WSJ.com and printed that article for my C650GT file. If anyone needs it I'll send it to them...just ask. Or, is there a place in this forum to post a link?
What a review! I don't go anywhere without someone at a stop light asking me if it's a scooter, is it fast, where did I get it and every other envious question.
Dan Niel hit the nail on the head with this review. I'd rather ride my GT than my RT.
Thanks for the heads-up.

1) You can post a link in the text of any thread just by copying the link from your browser's URL field, and pasting in the text, like so:

2) However, in the case of this (and many other articles, both from the WSJ and other news sites), the complete text is behind what's known as a "pay wall." That is, those who are non-subscribers cannot read the entire article. So it's nice that you offered to share it with others who ask you, but you'll have to provide the full article to them -- perhaps there's an option for subscribers to download it as a PDF -- rather than just provide the URL above.
