Timing Chain Tensioner Recall

Got my letter today for all it's worth. Basically: "Your bike has been recalled due to a faulty cam chain tensioner, but we don't have the parts to fix it. Stay tuned, but if you break down you have Roadside Assistance."

My luck, if I need RA, I'll be in the same pickle I was last year when they couldn't find a tow company to come get me because the closest dealership was across State lines, and the closest one within the State was too far for anyone to take me...

So called BMW Canada today and asked if I would receive a letter about the recall of the tensioner and they informed me that my serial number was not one of the scooters being recalled.
I then called my local dealer again and they agreed that yes it was being recalled
They were not able to answer the question as to what the manufacture dates that were affected for this recall. I have a 2013 built on September 14 2012. I found the manufactured dates range from August 2 2012 till February 18 2014.

You've got to wonder why it's SO HARD for service managers to just say "I don't know, but I'll try to find out for you" instead of just outright lying, or making up sh**. It's frustrating!!

I work a support line from time to time in my job and if I don't know the answer, I have NO problem admitting it, but I do go through the effort of trying to find out, and then calling back. It's become a lost art, I'm afraid...

Your so right Jamie. The aviation school I attended forbade instructors from anything other than 100% correct answers, "I don't know but I'll find out" was imbedded into the academy culture and it was a great help to keep bad information from spreading.

Amen to the last two comments. But that's what great about being in this forum. We all learn so much from each other that we are armed with sometimes/often better quality info than the BMW service people. Imagine if this was pre-internet. I'd probably have to just take the service guy's word for it .....

Well, I'm thinking with no internet we'd just pass around Yellasei's home phone number. Screw the time difference.

basically guy's, if the body of the tensioner has no date stamping on the body of it, it needs replacing. i witnessed a GT motor that the tensioner let go and the chain had jumped on the inlet cam sprocket but no witness marks on either the valves or pistons.

FWIW, I received my letter a few days ago, but the dealer knew nothing about the recall and my VIN wasn't listed. I called BMW and they admitted the VIN's have not been updated to the dealers yet... Left hand sends the letter, right hand knows nothing about it!!! BMW claims parts are now available. We'll see...

Tensioner replaced yesterday and the barking sound is gone, hopefully for good!

Did they just replace the Tensioner, what did they do to fix the Barking Seal?
Mine goes in to the Dealers in a couple of weeks time for the tensioner and noise investigation

As far as I know they only replaced the tensioner and the bark is gone. Will be taking it for a longer trip down to Seattle on Sunday so will see if it is gone for good.

The recall has been announced for us Aussies as well. My mates C650 GT and my C600 Sport @ 14500 K's are just fine, so guess it will be a free wash for the trouble..

This is my first time to post on a thread. I have been complaining to my dealer's service manager since January about the noise. To me, it resembles the clatter you get when a car needs to have it's rocker arms adjusted. I finally received my recall letter on July 18th. The noise started at about 10,000 miles, and I now have 11,000+ on it. The dealer received their alert about the same time. But same story as elsewhere from corporate : "Don't call, us we will mail you a letter when the part will be available." Next ride will be to baby it to the dealer whenever that is!

Took the bike down to Seattle and back riding up and down I-5 at 120+ kmh and everything works just fine with no more noise. Great trip but the 45 minutes wait at the border to get back into Canada in 27 degrees celsius heat (about 85 for you down South) was not that much fun. Interestingly enough the bike did not seem to mind too much all the idling in the heat while my friend on his 1200 GS had some issues with his oil temperature climbing way up. I guess having this big radiator up front is helping keeping things cool in the engine.

I also can report that the X-Screen I recently installed on my 600 sport makes a huge difference while riding on the highway at more than 100 kmh (60mph). The windscreen flexes quite a bit when passing large semi-trailer trucks but the reduction in noise and buffeting is amazing!

I will let you know next time I am in your area. This trip was a bit rushed since we were in Seattle just for one day looking at a sailboat that my friend just purchased. I live in Victoria so if you ever happen to come on the island let me know ahead of time and I can show you some good riding roads around town.

FWIW: The BMW scooter isn't the only recall on the scooter block. Just received a letter from Piaggio ... Our hand built 946 is on recall regarding fuel lines. Even the über boutique bikes have issues. Guess it's just the way of the world these days.

I received the notice weeks ago and finally got around to calling my dealer. The don't have the parts and they said another letter would be going out indicating the parts are in for the service to be completed. Something is telling me this won't get done till spring. Riding season ends here about November and probably won't be getting back on the road till April at best.
