Trip Modifications: Flow Shield and Throttle Rocker

Hey Gang,

I'm planning a trip; northern Ohio to S Carolina and then a leisurely sweep back east before heading home. You tubed what some others have done on their bikes (not on anything like my 650GT) and am interested in thoughts of our group as to adding a removable flow shield rather than buying a complete new windshield and a throttle rocker (have never seen one in person) rather than an after market cruise control.

Thanks, in advance, for any guidance.

I tried a crampbuster type; for me it was more in the way than just holding the throttle. I know on the Burgmans, they were buying a thick oring and putting it at the gap
at the far end of the grip.

I did 6 hours to go from Seattle to Bogans oasis just south of Clarkston washington. just the stock windshield, didn't bother me at all.
I am looking into a Xcreen add-on for my shield as it can be removed when not going on long trips. If you go with somthing like that let us know how it goes.

here are some videos from that area of washington, trying out a new camera. might be a littel boring; 1st one is rattlesnake grade (1000ft from bottom to top)
and top of Mesa with 3-4 miles of straight lines for top speeds up to 114 by gps

I replaced the stock bar end weights with Throttlemeisters. They came in very handy when I rode to Indianapolis last month. I just wish I'd had the Aeroflow shield too, but I didn't get that till after I got back home.

Yes. It's a throttle lock, not a true cruise control... but it does allow you to rest your right hand from time to time which helps on long trips.

Like a couple of others here, I am surprised BMW didn't equip the GT model with a true cruise control but I guess they had to keep the costs down and it really is targeted at the URBAN rider, not the cross-country Iron Butt types that typically buy BMWs.

I went for a long ride this weekend and wished I had throttlemeister installed. JaimeC, is installation as easy as they say on the website? Did you purchase "standard" or "heavy". Any info would be greatly appreciated as I'm going to be placing my order soon. Thanks.

It was easy enough for ME to install (I'm not mechanically savvy in any sense of the word). I got the standard ones in black (I thought they'd look better than the silver). It even comes with the necessary allen wrench to remove the stock weights, too.

I have the X-creen installed and it makes a huge difference for me. I am 6 feet tall and the stock screen was just awful for me. I leave it on all the time and the wind hits the top of my helmet.
It however is still not to my liking so I am probably going to get the Givi windshield with the side deflectors. I think that will be the ticket for taller riders.
The only downside with the X-creen is that it does put alot more pressure and flex on the windshield at highway speeds. I ended up mounting it lower than recommended and that has relived some of the pressure without effecting the air going over my head. This is why I think an aftermarket windshield that is taller and thicker (to prevent flexing) is a better solution.

For a throttle lock I use this one and it works as well as any for a reasonable price.

I just came back from whole day ride and the only thing that got uncomfortable was my wrist, I really couldn't use the throttle lock as we were all riding in a group. I used a crampbuster instead and that did help some.

The stock seat is surprisingly comfortable for long travel. Once I add the Givi windshield with side deflectors I should be able to ride as long as needed.

Are you lacking the torx driver to get the stock one off? I thought it came in the package...

No torx included. Actually thought I might be able to get it out with an allen wrench. That is the side I dropped a few weeks ago (broke the brake lever) and when I couldn't budge the bolt I thought maybe I jammed it. Didn't want to do any damage by forcing the bolt so I decided not to screw around with it. Then again, would a torx driver make that much difference (vs an Allen wrench)?

If you live near a Harbor Freight you can get a Torx (they call it a star, copywrite thing) bit inexpensively. Don't use an allen or you might damage the Torx bolt. If nothing else maybe a dealer near you'll give you a break and loosen it.

It came with the Throttlemeister. Guess it didn't come with the Kaoko...

Hi guys - just brought the 650 home to go with my Piaggio collection (BV350 and MP3-500).

JaimeC - can you please tell me which model throttlemeister you purchased for the BMW? I have one on my MP3 and would like one on the bmw too.

Just check their site, they have one specifically for the BMW C650GT. I went with the standard weight version in black. It looks like a factory item on the scoot... perfect fit.

I just installed the Wunderlich deflector. You can find videos on the Wunderlich site (Wind Deflector C650 GT | BMW Wunderlich America) and on YouTube. The wind and buffeting with the stock 650GT windscreen were pretty intense. The Wunderlich ($130 on Amazon) cut the noise/buffet by 80% even at highway speeds. The deflector is in my line of sight, but I noticed that after a few minutes on the first ride, it blended in with the overall view. Finding the sweet spot setting is an individual "taste". As you'll see on their site video, it is infinitely adjustable. The electronic windscreen on the 650GT makes it easier to play with different height settings while riding. I may yet go to an aftermarket, taller windscreen, but for now, this deflector seems to do the trick without drilling holes in the windscreen or any other mods to the bike. I'll probably remove it for summer riding when the windscreen is lowered.
