So, after putting 400 miles on the bike with a pillion the last few days, ride report here: http://www.bmw-scooters.com/forum/t...ic-Coast-Highway?p=14236&viewfull=1#post14236 I have some thoughts on the bike, mostly good.

My ride is a 2013 C600 Sport, now has 8000 miles on it. The bike performed as expected, never a want for power, weather overtaking on single lane highways or climbing 6-8% grades. My comfort was never an issue, my wife had two complaints: 1 her butt got sore quickly, but I believe that comes from lack of experience as a pillion. She has been on with me for about 150 miles total this year prior to this trip. Secondly, the wide seat causes hip pain so we stopped about every 35 miles or so, yikes! Otherwise she said she had plenty of room and getting on and off not an issue and the GIVI side cases were not at all an issue.

Wind management is pretty borderline, though, there was a steady 15-20 mile per hour wind with 30mph gusts. When coming from the side, it made for a crappy ride, especially the 150 miles home which were pretty much windy the whole way. Headwinds weren't as bad, just loud. The bike plowed through them without trouble, and with a passenger, side winds didn't really cause handling problems, but I have had issues as a single rider.

With the 39 liter GIVI topcase, GIVI easylock side cases, 25 liters each, the tunnel bag which I estimate to be about 12 liters, and the underseat storage, there was plenty of room for two. The side cases are semi rigid and I replaced the cheap combination locks that came with them for a set of Masterlocks for $8. GIVI recommends using the rain covers even as protection from the sun if they will be out for a long time. No issues.

THE ISSUES:
#1 Weight: fully loaded with luggage, the bike is about 600lbs. Add to that the wide and fairly tall seat, it can be an issue during low speed maneuvering. I never had a true issue, but it is noticeable at parking lot speeds in small town streets.

#2 Clutch engagement: This actually bugged me more than the weight. I'm pretty sure my clutch is glazed over or whatever the correct diagnosis is. Managing slow speeds and creeping along with a snatchy clutch can be an issue. My bike would vibrate tremendously during slow take-offs. I think and aftermarket clutch may be on the shopping list.

Great bike. If my wife decides she wants to do more trips, I will either A) look for a bike with her actually sitting on them, or B) Dr. Pulley Clutch, (probably inevitable anyway) C) airhawk seat.

Forgot to mention, we also used Sena SMH10 headsets and it was great, whether for music or communication.

Tried the airhawk seat for my wife. She thought it was too "loosey" as she would roll forward on stops. I customized my front seat with a Russell Day long. We're going to go back and customize the back for her.

So far as slow speed. I ride the rear brake and it stands straight up!

grey.hound,

How did you mount the Givi side cases? I have a C650GT and it seems there are no sidecases available for these bikes by any of the hard case makers - Givi, Shad, etc. Ive seen some pages that show the fitment as discontinued and Ive wondered if any of the racks for other BMW's of bikes could be modified easily to fit the C650GT. Thanks,

It was not easy to find them. They have been discontinued for the Sport model, but I don't know about the GT. What I did was find the GIVI model number, then searched and searched for them. Many places had them listed but not in stock. Finally a dealer in Canada said he could get the Kappa brand (same as GIVI). So my advice, try to find the part number for the GT, then search and search; even Europe. Good luck.

Quick search gave me this part number: GIVI PL5106 Pannier Rack for BMW C 650 GT; they take the Monekey side cases.

Overly wide rear seats have been a problem for my wife on both the B650 and the 650GT. She loved the back seat on our Goldwings which didn't make the passenger sit with legs spraddled. I think the problem is where the engine with the CVT and fuel tank is located I what causes the problem. Motorcycles, even the Goldwing with it's opposed 6 cylinder engine are pretty narrow behind the engine compared to a scooter. I'd have thought the Sport would have been a bit less 'plump' behind the rider than the GT.

Give rocky Mayer a call at Bill Mayer saddles in Ventura
He can and has worked miracles with the board BMW calls a seat
If you have time bigoted school starts schedule a ride in, some nice hotels in old town area lots to see and do
Expect 3 hours for seat build, I've been their at 0700 and back on road by 1000

May look into that. Jaime also reminded me that Corbin is just a couple hours ride from here too.

Corbin only sells a seat for the GT and they won't custom build one on your seat pan either. They wouldn't even re-cover one of their own seats for me. Told me I'd have to buy a new one. I haven't been able to find anyone that makes a seat for the Sport, so I think your only option is someone who will build a custom seat for you using your seat pan. I always used Rocky's brother Rick Mayer and love(d) his seats (I've still got 3 of them), but others had bad experiences with him that caused him to go out of business. I've heard mixed reports about Bill Mayer seats since Rocky Mayer took over. Some had good experiences and some had bad experiences.

I've heard good reports about these 2 guys. www.richscustomseats.com and Seth Laam who I believe used to work for Rick Mayer. His seats look a lot like Ricks did. www.laamseats.com

FYI... Russell Day Long Saddles is Bill Mayer's original design. He sold out to Russell several years ago. Rocky Mayer (Bill's son) makes his own seats and doesn't use the original Bill Mayer design.
