Wunderlich Windshield for C400GT

In my quest to obtain more wind protection, I recently purchased a Wunderlich replacement shield for my 2022 C400GT. Cost was $229 and they were in stock in the Wunderlich America warehouse. I received it in just over a week.

First, some perspective: While the factory windscreen coupled with the stock fairing is actually quite good for wind coverage, I experienced rather strong buffeting around the top of my head (I am 5'10"). Previously, I purchased a CalSci "large" windshield to help with the buffeting, but in order to make it fit I had to enlarge the bottom set of holes by about 1/4", which I did with a drill. I was disappointed to have to do that, and I'm sure that CalSci would have made it right if I had brought it to their attention, but I didn't, and after riding with it for awhile and not sensing a tremendous difference I went ahead and removed it permanently, putting the stock shield back on. Then, I added a Puig Clip-on Windshield Extender, which did push the air over my head and made a noticeable difference. But I was still curious if there was something better, and didn't really want the extra-large Givi shield.

So I decided to give the Wunderlich a try and received it just today. It came wrapped in a very nice cloth bag. Installation was a breeze, no more than 10 minutes, and the holes WERE AN EXACT FIT for the mounting location. Appearance wise it's a beautiful shield, just a little bit taller than stock but much wider. At full handlebar lock the mirror stems stop about 1" away from the shield on each side. Time to ride -- I immediately noticed no significant buffeting around my head, and to put my head into the air flow I had to raise myself about 3"-4" off the seat. Because the height of the shield is about the same as stock, it's easy to look over it when riding, or you can slightly lean and look through it. Overall, I am very happy with the wind protection and won't be going back to stock. I believe based on the shape of the shield (which has strategically placed flares vs. the CalSci product which is just higher and wider) that it performs better than the CalSci. But I know that is subjective and your results may or may not be the same.

I've tried a lot of configurations:

Stock (currently using)

Stock with Puig extender

Wunderlich

Givi (currently have still in the box)

Calsci (Small)


These are my opinions at 6' 02": The Givi is the best out of all of them whisper quiet but still has adequate air flow and it is very unattractive (which is why it is back in the box) IMO. Calsci took second place and was quieter than stock and had good airflow. The Wunderlich was just marginally better than stock. Stock with Puig clip was not much better than stock. Stock is what it is; more of a bug shield than anything else for me.

Windshields are like seats; appropriately judged subjectively as we all may have slightly different preferences. That said, thanks for posting this! It is definitely going to help someone make a decision.

@400GT Flyer & @mzflorida : Useful info from both of you, when, hopefully, both existing and prospective owners do some research on the forum on this topic.

And I agree with both of you: very personal situations, just like seats. It depends on the torso, neck, and head sizes, how far back you sit from the bars (which depends, for instance, on arm length), and so on and so forth.For instance, I remember adding Laminar Lips to windscreens, starting back almost 20 years ago. I mention that, because they worked for me with some bikes and their stock windscreens, but didn't work on others -- it was a matter of the design of the stockers, how far back I sat from them, etc.

With the C 400 GT, I've only tried the stock (for a couple of weeks on C 400 X tours) and ordered the Wunderlich with the GT, because my wife hoped that the mild buffeting out back could be reduced a bit. And that brings up yet another matter for consideration: how well a specific windscreen works for your passenger, if you ever ride two-up.

I didn't know about the other available windscreens, hadn't researched it much at the time. I've certainly heard of Givi for cases and windscreens -- a lot of Burgman riders use them, although I went with Clearview on my two Burgman 650s -- and I'd never even heard of Calsci until @mzflorida mentioned them a few months ago.

FWIW, I'm satisfied with the Wunderlich (and so is my wife), and I like that you can get it with a closeable vent (which I had on my Clearviews, too -- probably the same supplier). Today I went for a 70 mile ride and noticed that I still get a small bit of turbulence near the top of my helmet, which sounds reasonable given the height of the Wunderlich windshield is about the same as the factory windshield. So like I did with the factory windshield, I also installed a Puig Clip-on Windshield Extender (about $100 on Amazon), and it made a very big (positive) difference in eliminating the turbulence and wind noise.

I highly recommend the Puig product over cheaper similar products, which I have also tried. The Puig quality is top notch, it is adjustable, and the two-point mounting system is very secure and will not damage your windshield.

I see from earlier in this thread that you're 5'10", while I'm 5'9" (with a 29" - 30" inseam). I've done testing with my left hand while at speed, to check out the airflow pattern over the Wunderlich. In my case, it's okay -- over my head -- but your report is good to know.

I did a search now for puig windscreen attachment on Amazon, and there are a couple of different add-ons. Just for future reference (for other taller folks), you have a link to the one you bought?

I also did the left hand test with the Wunderlich and while the majority of wind is pushed over my helmet, there is still a small amount remaining where the Puig takes care of it. It's a noticeable difference.

If for no other reason to go with Puig, or another quality brand, the optical clarity is predictable and very good. eBay or Ali Express products don’t have that level of predictability.

I also got the Wunderlich fitted to my GT400. I added the Winderlich hand guards too. Highly recommend those also to keep windblast totally off the hands.

Full agreement on the handguards, none better on any bike I've ever owned. The windscreen, we'll have to politely agree to disagree! IT was just okay in my opinion. I feel I lucked out in that mine was defective, the vent would not stay closed, and was able to return it.
