6000 mile oil change

Changed oil today with 10W50 Castrol supplied by my local dealer. This is the second oil change since the 600 mile check and the first one I've done on this scooter. I've heard of a couple people losing the oil screen into the engine case. To prevent this I use a long Phillips screwdriver. I slip the screen up the screwdriver shaft, put the screwdriver into the oil drain hole all the way in and then slide the screen down the screwdriver shaft until its seated. No chance of losing the screen that way. I reset the service warning from 6,000 to 12,000 miles with my GS-911 reader. All the dealer will have to do is make a few checks which ought to keep the cost of the 6000 mile check pretty low. I used a K&N 164 oil filter. It has a 17mm boss on the bottom which makes the filter easy to remove or replace without a special oil filter wrench. I got the old filter out the hard way, punched two holes in the bottom, let it drain and then drove a couple of finishing nails into a scrap piece of oak I had on hand. That made me a fine temporary oil filter wrench.

One other tip, when installing the 14mm oil drain plug back I put a small piece of paper towel over the end of a 14mm socket and press the plug into the socket. The piece of paper trapped in between the socket and plug keeps the plug from falling out of the socket when you put it back in place. Screw the plug part way in, pull the socket out to remove the paper, and finish the installation. That keeps the paper from getting caught in the threads or under the plug.
 
When/why did you do a change between the 600 and 6000 service?

The remainder of the checks the dealership is going to do seem fairly straightforward. If you'd like, I can shoot the spec sheet for the 6k service your way.
 
I also changed mine at 3600 miles and plan on doing it again at 6500 or so which won't happen until Spring more than likely. At 5600 miles now. I know it's way before recommended but it seems as if 5000 plus miles between changes is a lot to me, yes I know it's synthetic but still seems like a lot. Thanks or the comment on people losing the screen inside the engine, yikes, I didn't even think that would be possible?
 
I changed the oil at 5799 miles. Close enough to 6000 don't ya think? It's a lot cheaper for me to do it than have the dealer do it during the 6000 mile check. The old oil which had 5200 miles on it was plenty black and there was a bit of fine metal dust on the plug magnet. Both are to be expected in a new engine. The seat is beginning to break in now, much more comfortable than it was when I first got the bike. It could however be my seat that's breaking in. Either way the bike is more comfortable to ride now. Easier to reach the ground now too.

I guess that I had read from your original post that you had changed the oil somewhere between 600 and 6000. My bad.
