I was at the fuel pump today and a older gentleman walked up to me and gave the scoot a quick look over and said "those BMW emblems you put on that bike are worth more then the bike"

I have had two people ask me if it is really a BMW. Of course, I tell them no and smile thinking about how anyone could be such an obtuse dumbass.

Yeah, I had one lady ask me when BMW started making motorcycles (duh, before they started making cars). Motorcycle history is part of this avocation.
It has been my experience that BMW motorcycle people are often a little older (sometimes a lot older) and typically better off financially (sometime a lot better off) than bike owners of other brands...including Harleys. And that is definitely not a knock against Harleys..It is just that a lot of new riders think they need to own a Harley in order to have a "real" motorcycle. Those that stick with the sport learn that there are a number of great brands and fantastic bikes that are neither Harley nor BMW.

Most people who have asked about my bike seem happily surprised that BMW makes such a scooter, but not bewildered. It's as though because it is a BMW that it makes some sense to them. I did not get this reaction to my Burgman 650 and it always seemed that additional explanation was needed (when I was in the mood to explain).

I agree. It is weird that when people hear you have a BMW, they often go "Oh, wow" (like you must be especially well off financially). My favorite bike of all time was my KLR 650; a bike significantly $ less than my 650GT but also tons less sophisticated. It was the most fun more so because of my age than the bike.
