Mostly for appearance and hopefully less wind noise and no need for the wunderlich wind delfector. I never liked the length of the OEM screen, it didn't seem to match. Since I have the winderlich wind deflector (http://www.bmw-scooters.com/forum/threads/1028-Wunderlich-Wind-Deflector-install), I hope a shorter screen combined with that will do the trick. Actually, I hope just the shorter screen will cut down on the wind noise. My inspiration was some of the after market screens I have seen from malossi and ermax

The two really sporty screens are too short for travel, IMO. The longer Ermax seems just about right at 51cm. My original thought was basically to copy the design of the malossi but make it 51 cm tall not 41 as they have it designed. For those who haven't followed along, I think I measured the OEM to be 61cm from top to bottom tip.

So, it was really quite simple though I was a little nervous. I watched a few videos, read some on the googlenet and decided to do it.

First step, masking tape, both sides:

Then measure. I ended up doing an arc, about 48cm from this point all the way from left to right. The side of the C600 windscreen has a little flair so-to-speak. I decided this would be the end points on each side, that is how I came up with 48cm.

Here is the finished product, Three pictures from highest to lowest positions:

Again, highest to lowest:

Went for a ride early this morning to check it out. A mix of city and highway, 60 miles speeds up to 70mph. It is definitely quieter at speeds to about 50 mph. The airflow is much smoother for me than before and I can now hear the engine. Obviously there is more wind, especially at high speeds. In fact, at 70mph with the screen all the way up it was way to loud to enjoy. I may need to put the wind deflector back on. The think is, most of my riding is under 60mph and at those speeds its great.

Went on another ride today, 200+miles. I would have gone longer but the wind was a steady 18mph with gusts in the mid 20's. My report is much the same. I kept it in the lower 2 positioons for most of the ride. At one point I did raise it all the way just to alleviate some of the blast going into the headwind. At the lowest setting it was Ok, just had to hold on a little more which gets tiring. On the return 100 miles it was mostly at my back so I kept the screen in the middle position. Really smooth air flow, quiet(er) than before and being summer, it was nice.

So, I can say I'm very happy with it, still don't know about the wind deflector. I'm enjoying the shorter windscreen. For those who would rather just buy a shorter screen, the ermax 51cm is the closest to what I have done. I may buy one eventually just for looks.
