Last weekend I took four days for an easy trip to Maine.Nothing special going on , just to get out of the house
and maybe see some Moose. Left on Thursday morning with some miles along the coast , New Hampshire into Maine, lots of ocean views and light pre-tourist season traffic.There are some nice twisty coastal roads if you know where to look. Made a brief stop at Cape Neddick, and a picture of Nubble Light.

BTW, there is a picture of this lighthouse on the Voyager Spacecraft.

I didn't take any more pictures of note on Thursday as it started raining and I kept moving as that keeps you dryer and gets you to a dry hotel faster.
The hotel was in Wilton, neighbor to Farmington and one of University of Maine campuses.
 
Friday, I headed out to ride the Rangely Lakes area. Moose country! But first I wanted to stop at a Narrow Gauge Railroad for a ride. There was a system of narrow gauge in Maine that connected the coast with timber country, and a few museums have working engines and rolling stock. Unfortunately, the line I visited was still closed.IMG_0549.webpIMG_0547.webp

I like the tires a lot, I have been scraping the center stand a lot more often since I put them on.
The tires the Sport came with, and I forget what they were, had to be the worst motorcycle tires I ever had on any bike I ever owned.
 
When you do a solo trip, you can stop for any odd reason. I used to ride with a group, but, they never stopped anyplace other than for lunch or ice cream. There is lots to see and I stop for anything that looks interesting. After missing the narrow gauge I saw a sign up the road for "Daggert Rock". A couple of miles of dirt road took me to see the largest "Erratic" in Maine.
A steep climb from the road got me this picture.

There were no moose hanging out there, so I was on my way.
 
From Daggert Rock I headed North to the Carrabasset Valley. Ski season is over, tough to ski on the leftover snow of Sugar Loaf Ski Area.IMG_0559.webp

That really is a great picture. What a fantastic part of the world.
 
In Stratton, I stopped for a break at Flagstaff Lake. Wish I had brought a lawn chair, I could have sat there for a couple of hours.P5200767.webpP5200765.webp P5200761.webp
 
From Stratton the road goes to Canada a few miles away. I was making a big circle, so headed west to Rangely Lake, a prime Moose area. P5200773.webp

Stopped for lunch in Oquossoc , the restaurant was old and one end was definitely sinking in to the ground. Talked to a Canadian couple who were riding their new BMW across New England to Quebec. Then I headed South and stopped on a high "scenic vista" with Mooselookmeguntic Lake for the view.View attachment 1631 View attachment 1632
 
As I went South the road signs frequently warned of Moose running across the road, yet I didn't see any. The Maine ticks carry a disease that is decimating the Moose population. Twenty years ago you would have seen at least a handful of Moose along this road. I did see a broken motorcycle and stopped to help. You who think all you need is a cell phone would have waited a long time on this road for help to come, there were no bars on my phone. A couple of locals stopped also as they knew the state of communications on this road.
When I got back to my hotel , I talked with a rider from Oregon, he was on his way west after going to the end of US Route 1 in Madawaska Maine. He also saw the South end in Key West. This was his "four corners" tour.
 
Saturday I headed Northeast. Destination Moosehead Lake. I took mostly back roads, and except for an occasional pond or swamp, saw lots of trees and a few old farms, although I always enjoy riding through farm country. Approaching Greenville, I stopped at this tourist info center and admired their exhibition "fire tower".P5210792.webp

The Katadin was moored at the town dock in Greenville. Years ago it pushed rafts of logs down Moosehead lake to the sawmills. Today it takes passengers on day trips across the lake.
