My new BMW Moped!

I just bought the New 650 2015 BMW Scooter. People always refer to my Honda silver wing out front of my place with a for sale sign on it as a Moped! Any chance I will stop hearing my bike called a moped now?

I've had my niece's American husband refer to it as a moped. What I did was stop, stared at him and said. "Would you like to try any refer to my car as a go cart by any chance? That has an automatic transmission too!"

He mumbled something about that's what they call them in the states and left the room.

He has never ever referred to the scooter in any way ever since. My niece did tell me that she had a good laugh when that evening he complained that I had embarrassed him.

Moped is an acronym of two words: "motor" and "pedal." A moped is a motor vehicle with pedals like a bicycle. They were very popular in the late 70s and early 80s in the States because you didn't require a license to ride one, and they got over 100 miles to a gallon of gas. Because they were restricted to 20mph top speeds once gas rationing was ended they quickly lost popularity to traditional scooters and motorcycles.

I remember on steep hills you had to assist the engine by pedaling (that's how underpowered they were). Starting them was fun too... no electric start, you had to pedal like a maniac while engaging the choke and throttle (no electric start). You really couldn't ride them like a bicycle either. Not counting the weight, they were geared so low that even if you pedaled like a hamster on crack you still couldn't make it move as fast as the engine could.

Since our scooters do NOT have pedals, they are not now nor have they EVER been referred to as "Mopeds."

It's more motorcycle then scooter I think. It's a motorcycle engineered to be a scooter. I know, it's an SUM. Sport Utility Motorcycle

"Notcher" covers a lot of ground. Is a Vespa a "Notcher" ? Yes. Is a Harley with fairing and very low seat a "Notcher"? Yes.

That about covers it, and there is nothing to dispute.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you call your bike as long as it's fun.
 
I've ridden mine in group settings (including as ride leader) many times, with "real" motorcycles. After they've observed my "moped" jump onto a highway, maneuver through twistees, and climb mountain auto roads, they realize it's an automatic motorcycle. Performance-wise, it is far superior in handling, acceleration and braking than my Honda Shadow 750 (which I don't use for longer trips anymore). The frosting on the cake is opening the trunk and letting them have a peek, or having by-standers walk right by their bikes at a stop and ask me the questions you all get. The boys and girls on their real bikes are cured of their misconception now.:o
 
I have had people's jaws drop when I told them it's a 650cc & have then left them behind at the lights haha :cool:

I call my little smart car a go cart 😉
 
My new BMW moped 8 days after driving it off the lot. :O) I was going to wipe it down with a quick detail spray product but I was filling some water barrels and my hose got away from me blasting under my pants and hitting the bike before I could turn it off. So I wiped it down tight there and then. Probably turned out better then the detail stuff would have.

Then it was on with the cover, go nigh nigh scooter.

Awesome color. I just got the half cover cause it's parked in the daytime in the sun...
