YSS Rear Suspension Upgrade

I have a c400gt, latest version, it rides like a hard tail.. what rear suspension. So considering changing the rears. Any feedback from other who have done this, are the results worth the cost. Thanks

I don't own a C400GT yet, but probably will next week. I have used the YSS on a 21 Yamaha Xmax and they are definitely a fairly good option for an aftermarket shock. They are certainly better than most OEM shocks and will likely improve ride characteristics. Like @byee said, they soak up bumps and absolutely provide a more confident and comfortable riding experience. I know this is a YSS question so apologies for digressing. If I buy the C400GT next week, I will go with the Hyperpro shocks. I've had them on the last 5 motorcycles I've owned, and they are unquestionably an apex product (they did not have an option for the Xmax without a very expensive custom build). Hyperpro are shipped from the distributor configured for you with a spring that matches your body weight and riding style. I've used EPM Performance to purchase them each time and they are fantastic to work with. My opinion; suspension upgrades are the best money spent on a motorcycle.

Regarding the YSS brand, they are often counterfeited. I received one of the fakes (confirmed by YSS) which I purchased unwittingly from Ebay. For me, I would only buy YSS from a reputable distributor.

My rear preload is set to 5. Really comfy one up with a full top box. Bit clunky when the box is not on but I live with it as the adjuster is an sob to use. I weigh 14st, 7lbs fully rugged up.

Wood the yss void the factory warranty anyone no
I would believe the answer is that replacing the rear shock would not void the warranty on most other components of the bike. But I would not trust my opinion, or anyone else here on this forum to give you a defensible answer. A warranty is a legal contract, varies in limitations and enforceability by state, and can become complex to interpret. I would email BMW to get confirmation or go through the warranty docs to see if it is clear one way or the other.

Reviving this thread....... Looking for these shocks today and the price is closer to 1K. Does it exist at a lower price point?
I did a little digging, without all that much success. To recapitulate for newer members:

1) Yep, Bikerzbits, in Thailand, where @byee bought his (see post #6), and which I had bookmarked, seems to no longer sell them. For the C 400, it looks as if they sell only fork springs (https://bikerzbits.com/bmw/bmw-c400/ ). That's too bad, because as @byee noted, he paid only $510.

2) The cheapest on eBay right now seem to be this, at $696.91 + $65.38, from sc-racingshop in Italy:

3) Tiniracing, also in Italy, has them for €563.74 (c. $596) (with €710.81 crossed out, so presumably on sale), plus shipping, I presume. Unfortunately, not only are they marked down, but listed as "Out of stock" (which reminds me of old joke about butcher shops):

4) EPM Performance in New Jersey (I'm on their mailing list), which I believe is the designated USA importer for some manufacturers, has them listed for $972 + shipping:
That page says the product is for "2018 - 2024BMWC 400X" and I don't know whether there's any difference in the X vs. GT shocks for those years. I don't think so, but that's me.
5) EPM sells other makes of shocks, but they're expensive, too. In our case, the lesser of two HyperPro models for "2018 - 2024 BMW C 400 GT / X" starts at $964 + shipping:

That's all I got.

Resurrecting this thread from a couple of years ago, I ordered the YSS shocks about a week ago and expect to have them here (upstate NY, USA) shortly. And now, some notes for others, and a question for @byee ...

WHAT CHANGED?:

I had some life-style changes recently. In order:

- A year and a half ago, I replaced the stock shocks on my other bike, my Meteor 350. The stockers were, um, shockingly bad -- after all, while that bike is definitely a smile-inducing ride, it is certainly built to a price-point. The replacement shocks ("2Win," from the Shock Factory in France) made a tremendous improvement in the ride quality of that regular type of bike.

- Almost a year ago, a serious medical issue arose with my wife. As we got pretty far up there in age, the frequency of two-up riding has diminished almost to never, but with that change it is definitely not going to happen anymore. I mention this because one of my concerns with aftermarket shocks for the C 400 was the ease (or not) of changing preload between solo and two-up riding (see post #14 here). This is no longer an issue for me.

- A few months ago, I developed sciatica, which made bumps in the road, um, literally a PITA. I'm undergoing physical therapy for this, which is helping a lot, but still ...

PURCHASE DETAILS:

I bought these from Omnia Racing in Italy: https://www.omniaracing.net/en/yss-...00x-2018-p-653148.html?currency=USD&e_cId=223

Here are the details from Oct. 5, from my email confirmation:

Omnia Racing YSS shocks 2026-10-05.webp

This is cheaper than Bikerz Bits in Thailand, where @byee purchased them 4+ years ago (see post #6). (I think they stopped selling them for some time, but I just checked again -- https://bikerzbits.com/bmw-c400x-yss-g-top-black-series-tu362-440trcj-01-888a.html -- and they seem to offer them now. The total with shipping to NY is about USD 755.)

(Regarding some of the other shops I mentioned in my post #29 above, from almost two years ago, Tini Racing in Italy currently lists them for about USD 855, plus shipping: https://www.tiniracing.it/coppia-ammortizzatori-yss-topline-bmw-c-400-x-rif-yss-tu362-440trcj01.html . And EPM in New Jersey currently lists them for USD 999, plus shipping: https://epmperformance.com/products/yss-tu362-twin-reservoir-shocks-bmw-c-400x-tu362-440trcj01-888a . )

There is no mention of any tariff fees in my purchase from Omnia Racing in Italy, and the shocks are now in the hands of FedEx (I have a tracking number), which also doesn't mention anything about that. So I believe that that USD 691 is my final price, but if some pay-on-delivery fee arises I will post an update.

QUESTION ON INSTALLATION:

@byee noted in his original post in this thread that "The shocks were super easy to install," and also helpfully included some photos.

Replacement looks straightforward, all right, and the torque values are shown in the shop manual:

C400GT right spring strut (shock absorber) page 548.webp

C400GT right spring strut (shock absorber) page 549.webp

Plus, as I mentioned, I actually did this sort of thing myself, on my Meteor 350: just put the bike on its centerstand, and did one side at a time -- remove old, install new -- and then moved on to the other side.

Nevertheless, I'd appreciate a comment from @byee or anyone else who's replaced shocks on a C 400, regarding whether there are any "gotchas" to be aware of, or any tips and tricks related to what looks like a simple swap.

That's all I got.
