Motorcycle.com reviews the 2014 BMW C600 Sport

A good review. They were able to appreciate the machine for what it is - rather than for what it isn't (a standard motorcycle). It's a shame they didn't test a black one because overall performance would have been better.

Nice review.

Converting their overall rating of 84.25/100, the bike gets a "B".
Every sub-category was from B- to B+, except for two; Appearance gets an A- (!) trans and CLUTCH get a "C" (Dr. Pulley HIT Clutch and Sliders, anyone?)

Change-out those parts and it'll be a B+...pretty good rating for Motorcycle Dudes!

These Motorcycle Dudes do not ride bikes with CVTs. Period.

Comparing CVTs to other CVTs the BMW's is absolutely fine.

We're not riding motorcycles. If I wanted to ride a motorcycle I would buy one.

Why does this concept seem so hard for some to grasp?

Man oh man, that review makes me want to buy one.

uh, wait a minute....

But actually, now that I think of it, the bike itself has me thinking about buying another Beemer for another type of riding (800GS).

I'm with you Steve....my next Beemer will be a GS of some sort. I can already tell I love adventuring on the scooter and I can feel the trails calling.

Yeah, I've been scouting some likely prospects while out on the GT. Me thinks....trip time with some trail exploring is coming up soon.

LOL I was thinking the same thing, reading reviews before I purchased I was amused at how many "motorcycle" reviewers seemed almost disappointed it wasn't a motorcycle, jeeezuz! it says scooter right on the box it came in :D

Well, part of the problem is that scooters of this ilk, and there are a few, don't come close to what any preconceived idea of what a scooter is like from those inexperienced in this type of machine. "Real" scooter people - owners of Piaggio products, etc - actually may feel similarly to the motorcycle gang in that they don't see the BMW C600/650GT as one of their own either.

Both groups are correct, in my opinion. We can ride with anyone ( well, not supercross or motocross....but someday and with the right tires...;))

BINGO!!! Now that has my attention. I do love the comfort of my sport, but if BMW were to introduce a C600GS...I'd be all over it. Obviously it would not be for 'round the world global adventuring. But to go out on the trails and fire roads is totally what I'd like to do. I guess until then we should save our monies and buy used GS's and keep them for our weekend bikes. Something like an old Paris Dakar.

Maybe someone will do to a C600 what they did to this Tmax 530...

That is cool! That is actually what I was looking for when I originally started looking at motorcycles. I wanted a dirt bike/adventure/motard style bike for urban riding but I didn't want to deal with shifting in traffic. I wish BMW would cross the c600 with a GS. That'd would be nice. Kind of like their answer to Honda's NC700. I'd buy one of those today.

Even better, Aprilia already puts their big Maxi-scooter engine in a "traditional" motorcycle frame:
2014 Aprilia Mana 850 GT ABS Review

That thing gets far better reviews than the SRV850, too.

The Mana has been around for a number of years and there have been a number of other motorcycles with automatic or semi-auto transmissions. Like beauty, what is, or what is not a scooter can be in the eye of the beholder. However, under federal law a scooter is a motor cycle with a particular configuration. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in its regulations, specifically Reg. 571.123, defines a scooter as: “Scooter means a motorcycle that: (1) Has a platform for the operator’s feet or has integrated footrests, and (2) Has a step-through architecture, meaning that the part of the vehicle forward of the operator’s seat and between the legs of an operator seated in the riding position, is lower in height than the operator’s seat.” The hump on the T-Max and the BMW C class models pushes that definition a little but they are nonetheless scooters. I don't want to have to swing my leg up higher than it likes to go to get on a bike and if I'm wearing a suit that can tear the fabric. I like the protection from weather, puddles and debris afforded by the enclosed bodywork.

I'm 67, which is not all that old. But it's also not that young. I like to have my cake and eat it too and I think of my Sport as a very, very, civilized, powerful, PTW that fits my needs. If I long to go off road at this stage I'll drive one of my ranch vehicles with matching rifle rack and beer holder.

I rather like the idea of a GS (as apposed to dirt tires on our scooters). There is nothing better than a machine specifically engineered to perform a particular function. Anybody remember the El Camino? Not a good truck and not much of a car.

As I discovered last summer, a CVT is NOT the ideal transmission for poor to very poor traction situations. When trying to ride off of mud and wet grass, the rear tire would just spin right up no matter how gingerly I applied the throttle. Getting to the asphalt on two wheels was definitely a test of my balance and patience! With that in mind, I can imagine what kind of a dirt bike a CVT would make... hope you like going sideways!
