As I discovered last summer, a CVT is NOT the ideal transmission for poor to very poor traction situations. When trying to ride off of mud and wet grass, the rear tire would just spin right up no matter how gingerly I applied the throttle. Getting to the asphalt on two wheels was definitely a test of my balance and patience! With that in mind, I can imagine what kind of a dirt bike a CVT would make... hope you like going sideways!

What would have happened if you had been equipped with a set of aggressive knobby tires?

A very powerful motor and large rear sprocket tends to want to turn a dirt bike a bit sideways on hard acceleration.

It probably would've worked a lot better. A CVT dirt bike might be good for casual play-riding... but I have doubts it'd work particularly well in a competition setting against regular dirt bikes with clutches. What do I know, though? I'm hardly an expert. I'm sure some sharp engineer somewhere could figure it out.

I admit when buying the 650GT I was concerned about not having as much control with the cvt. It has been great for anything I have needed it for with the possible exception of a couple times when patches of ice and snow on my driveway would have been better handled with a clutch. Then again, the only other bikes I have owned were dual purpose with significantly different tires. Was it the tires or the lack of a clutch? Probably a little of both.

In my case, the ATC would not have helped as my bike came with ARI.
